People are recommending about 10X the total water you have. The flow of water is used to push the water on the live rock so it gets filter. I read somewhere else that you can't over filter.
I think you should be fine.
As far as the water breaking too much can send the flow down towards the live rock or locate your powerhead lower?
I just installed a Meio 620 (Which Ski Recommended) and I put it lower than my filters returns and it's shooting directly onto my Live Rock.
That's how I did it and it seems like my living things are happier now
I'm pretty sure that as long as you aren't making some type of a whirlpool effect you should be fine. Thats what I've read anyways. But I'm still a newb so I'd wait for further advice...
seriously just point it directly at the rock ? The microalgaes are blowing like a hurricane is going through with it skimming over the rock.
At the moment its like this (my paint skills suck)
The power heads are at the back and flow along the blue lines.
The canister filter (only there for turnover) takes water out and returns it along the red lines.
The live rock layout is in green.
The poor cleaner shrimp is looking a little windswept - will he be ok ?
EDIT : actually, looking at that image scaled down, it looks quite good
20x is the minimum recommended amount for a tank with corals. You are looking at double this and possibly more if you want SPS corals in a tank. You ideally want some flow from powerheads pointing at each other to create turbulence.
Don't worry about your little creatures in the tank. If you have ever went diving on a reef or seen a show on reefs on TV, you will see how tough the current is in nature. The little guys are use to high current and almost count on it so don't worry about them getting blown away, they live in very fast flowing water.
Agreed, you dont want to point the outlet of a standard centrifugal powerhead (like a maxijet) directly at a coral, but other than that, you should not be afraid of how much flow is in your tank. Some SPS keepers will go 50-100x tank turnover, your 20x isnt that much
