Adam West's Fins Arent Looking So Great

Hello again! information: He is a double tail half moon, mail, and i got him from petco 1 week ago. 5 gal tank, filter, heater (88*), live plants(3 amazon swords, 1 java fern, 1 marimo), gravel, and a hide-away cave type of thing.
Problem: Noticed today that his fins are looking a little tattered. I also thought his front fins were turning red because he was in a better place but now i'm thinking it might all be from ammonia? I dont have a kit here (hes a cubicle fish), but can get one here tomorrow. I do have PH and Ammonia tabs... Ideas? I just want to be a good fish-mom!

Clean water is the best thing for him.
Do water changes everyday to keep it 100% clean and see if that improves them
The red might be his colouring, cant really see all that well from the picture

Thanks for the response. It is hard to see the red in general, thats one reason im hoping it is his coloring, i feel like a burn should be blatant. Thats what i hope atleast. And water changes to come!
