Acceptable Nitrate Level

What is an acceptable level of Nitrate in a tropical tank?

Up to 20ppm is great, up to 40 is considered the norm. but fish (unless very delicate species)can be happy in up to 100ppm.

Where I live 40ppm is in my tap water so getting below that is near impossible as I have no plants

yes i think i have around 10 to 20ppm in my tap water so usualy mid week its between 20 and 40ppm and by the end of the week its between 40 to 80ppm
