Is there anything statistically done to have a pulse of demographics using the site ?

I'm curious :fish:

I don't know. It always amazes me a forum can have 100,000 registered memberships (over many years) and only a few dozen regular participants. Life happens and single questions get working answers, I guess.

If I go with my nose, the usual user is pretty old here, or they are a lot more mature than me and hide their game well.

A fact is that if I die tonight, I will just become an inactive account... I mean nobody in my entourage could have the slightest idea of my nickname and password on a fish forum... If they knew I was member.

Add to that the technical capability to do so.

If I'm not able to crawl to my keyboard to post it before. I'll just disappear.

It’s a mixed bunch here but I suspect it’s more old guys than anything else . Mid 50’s and up. Guys that have kept an aquarium off and on since childhood . Not sure but I think the younger crowd is more Facebook and Instagram and other things than a stodgy old forum . No attention span for the kids . Us old guys take the time to answer more in depth . I also think it’s way more guys than womenfolk .

Well, my nose may be good for age, more or less, but my Sexdar is not working.

We have a Captain that seems to be a lady because of the hate for plecos, And a guy named Gwand... That I must admit seemed a little macho for a girl. But I finally figured it out after some posts. My initial thoughts where Gwendoline. But my brain could not compute.

And I'm still trying to figure a lot of them. loll.

There are retired (time to participate) older men and women my age. It drops down by leisure time, and who would search for a forum in 2024. It's an old discussion format. I'm sure there are still people looking for list serves out there, but. Most fishtalk is elsewhere, with one or two line statements and questions.

My kids get their fish fixes from instagram, X and reddit. Great photos, less info.

We also have a bunch of younger members, and I get the sense a lot of the 'one thread question and out' members are in their 30s and 40s. We seem to have fewer dumb group attacks than other formats, again because I think forums are just not part of the culture anymore. I'm touching wood as I say that.

Most of the English speaking world seems represented here, along with a few people writing in what's not a first language.

As far as figuring people out, it doesn't matter. The less we know about each other up front the easier it is for us to make connections that survive the nasty polarization of our times. I like to know where in the world people are, as it's useful.

I have lost good internet friends in faraway places, and it can take months to find out what happened. Many of us lead compartmentalized lives. We don't always have any clear idea of who we're talking to, but we generally know what fish they like. That never gets into the obits.

Both you and Fishmanic thought I was a woman. I’m not even an effeminate man. Just an old dude.

Old fish keepers do not die, they just smell that way. (to paraphrase)

I'm in the older age bracket as well - as you can see from my joined date under my avatar I have been here for quite a while. But I'm not one of those who started keeping fish as a child, though we did have a goldfish which I'm sorry to say didn't last long. I do envy those of you who started young and have done so much.
