it's horrid. On the top of my tank i noticed a fine film across the whole tank. There are no fish in it yet so don' worry about that.

Basicaly i disturbed trhe tank as i had to re position my heather and now it has all broken up and looks like sick

Now it's not lumpy, or anything like that, but it has bunched together and looks horrid. I tried to get some of it out, but it's gooey and mad my stomach flip.

What is it, what caused it and how can i get rid of it as i was hoping to get some fishy soon.

Please help am thinking about starting it again, but i don't want to do that till i find out what is causing it, incase when i fill it up again the same thing happens.

***NEW TO THE TANK***

gravel
heater
already used bog wood (as i was told it would help with bacteria)

Thanks all

Im guessing its probably either some protein build up ont he surface, or dust and dirt from your gravel thats been stirred up collected together on the surface. This combined with the tannins could make for some lovely discoulouration lol.

Best thing to do is do a water change , then when the water has settled again, if there is any more build up on the surface, get a piece of A4 paper and drag it across the surface of the water to lift off the layer of film thats been created.

Excelent i shall give that a go. should i leave my filter out ill this is sorted or would this help as it will be water movement ? ? Maybe i could put my airstone in would that help ? ?

get a gravel cac use it slowly and you will get rid of the crap and not stir it up at all . you will need 1 to maintain your tank anyway .take the drift wood out and soak it for ages untill the tannin is redused or boil it out before you put it back in or it will look like crap for ages. yes ad air n keep filter on .

Leave the filter... - can you angle the return to create surface agitation?

Film on top of the water can also be caused by airbourn contaminants eg smoking..

Paper or kitchen towel can be dragged across the surface to remove the film...
