Alright, so you all probably already know this, but:
No matter how smooth the stones, don't assume the substrate is safe!!
For literally 2 months I have been thinking my poor betta Titan has been battling tailrot, and finrot on his 2 front hanging-down fins (ventrals?). But it was actually that the very smooth polished stones that were in his tank were ripping them!! My poor little guy would have a nicely healing tail/fins one minute, and for real, I'd come back 2 minutes later & they'd be missing a piece, or the ends would be shredded!
He's in good conditions, in a 2 gallon bowl, getting a water change every couple of days because I didn't want a filter flow to upset him (plus I couldn't get one to fit in lol), and in nice temperatures (around 25C, not even needing a heater because we're in the middle of a tropical summer). He loves his food, getting a variety of bloodworms, "betta bites", "protein packer", and flakes made from stuff like mosquito larvae, etc..
So.....I couldn't figure out for the life of me why this kept happening - oh my goodness, I am STUPID!! The whole time it was the stones on the bottom of his tank. Even though they weren't stacked, or moving, or jagged, or anything like that, he must have been resting on them and ripping his tail/fins when he got up. My poor guy, I feel so bad that I did that to him & didn't catch on for so long Anyways, they're almost fully healed now, after just 1 week of having no stones. He's not missing them at all, although I wish I could put his plant back in to brighten up his tank....but oh well, his health comes first always.
Anyhoo, just thought I'd share, in case anybody else has a similar problem! I'll post piccies of him when he's completely better, + pics of my 2 other guys & my soon to be getting butterfly delta male
