I have a 40 uk gals tank, and I am picking up 20KG of LR tomorrow. My question is.. how much rock is that?? As in, will I need extra ocean rock, or base rock for aquascaping? I always assumed that the LR alone would be enough to give me a good "look" but I've seen a few tanks recently, and 20kg seems to be a really small amount of rock. The footprint of the tank is 41" x 15"... I don't want masses, just enough to have 2 islands, maybe.. that kind of thing. Can anyone give me an idea? Also, around how much water will 20kg of LR displace??

Once again, GARF has another decent caculater for this: GARF

Click from the list on the left; "Calculators" then choose "Tank Water Volume"

It will allow you to put in some parameters and you can then see how much actual water volume will be left in the tank.

my 30 gallon tank swallowed up 15 kilos real easy.

I reckon 15 kilos took up about 1/8 of the physical space in my tank.

woah! ok... best start selling my soul to pay for more rock!! Thanks :)

I'll check out the GARF calculator, thanks!

It really depends how porous the rock is. If its really porous, then it will appear to take up a large "look" of the tank, but not displace much water. This is the kind of rock you want. The ones that look really big and when you pick them up they feel lighter than they appear. Also if I may reccomend, try getting larger pieces over smaller ones as aquascaping is easier with larger specimens, trust me -_-
