Recently, some of my fellow salt's have sent me PM's of support and concern about recent adversarial posts here. Hey...don't worry. That is what is so great about being in a forum...you get both sides of an opinion and you can choose your own path based on advice.

There isn't much here that gets me roiled up more than one member treating another member with disrespect. Other than that...I'm pretty much flame proof. Thanks for your support and concern. I have only one job here..to make sure that our salt section stays as organized as possible....stays as friendly as possible and I try and make it as fun as possible..IF that is possible. My really difficult job is to post advice that goes against the grain. It's not easy to tell someone "I wouldn't put that in your tank if I were you"..but..I would be doing everyone here a disservice if I didn't help provide all angles of an issue.

As many of you have seen, I don't and can't post to every thread. I don't need to. Our members have an excellent cross-section of experience and abilities. However, I AM AWARE that we are short several moderators and variety is a good thing. If it continues this way, after the New Year, I will approach Admin about the possibility of appointing a new salt mod.

Happy New Year to all and for those who expressed concern..... :good: and I personally say :thanks: I don't break easily and Admin put us mods here by for a reason. :big_boss:

I have several members in mind for mod status if it comes to that.

Im happy with the Mods we have, whats the problem SH. apart from your last couple of drunken posts about Christmas Carols and Xmas Mod Polls.
You seem to be coping just fine.

No fear of that here. Slander is verbal defamation. On the internet everything is typed, so it will be libel :)

I personally think we could do with another mod in the marine section. People tend to go with mods when there is a debate about different ways of doing something. There is the risk of someone always following SH who I am sure will not mind me saying is not always the absolute font of everything (not when we consider there is ultimately no right or wrong way of doing this, just experience of what seems to work and what doesn't).

Also, it would perhaps be nice to have an active mod like Nav again who had experience of keeping a larger tank with larger fish.

andy...keeping nano for 3 years doesn't make me an expert....never claimed to be....never claimed to be the end all or be all neither. I DO remember apprentice->journeyman->craftsman. It's more than just knowledge and one upsmanship. It's also how you deal with people and not let pride get in the way

Hang in andywg...you'll get there.

As for large tank experience, never had one and I may never go larger than 30G's. In fact, I'm still thinking pico and perhaps coldwater local.

As for Nav.....I miss him too. We had become good friends. Most of you don't know Great Lakes and HE was excellent too. After New Year....I have some recs in mind for a new salt mod.

I never said you were, but as the only mod there is a tendancy in some people to assume that. This is the point I was making (albeit perhaps poorly).

Hang in andywg...you'll get there.

Get where?

GL was modding when I first joined this site, and certainly was good.

Heh, I too miss Nav although I never really new GL. Nav's experience in keeping a really large tank was a great asset on here. One of my own early inspirations, his tank was great. I wonder what ever happened to that cube tank he was building. I digress... I think you're doin a great job around here too SH, and I'd love to see what your nano looks like today :)

On a similar note it would be nice if each of the fora in the marine section could have it's own mod... we each have our specialties and I don't think any one of us (Nav and Great Lakes included) could cover it all perfectly... but I suppose moderating isn't all about knowledge.

I totally agree as each section should have it's own mod who specialises in that specific catogary. This way everybody would know who to turn to for help and it would be easier for the mods to participate in most threads as it would mean less work looking through all the areas...

i dont agree on having a mod in the section that they know most about, mods arent all about knowledge, they are here to keep the forum at a steady pace, decide if something is right or wrong, and just make the forum more appealing to new lurkers who are trying to decide whether they should fully participate or not. Being knowledgeable in tanks doesnt make you a good mod, it just makes you a good member in the forums. Unfortunately, not everyone sees this as the case, many see mods as someone who knows everything about fish tanks.... Some fail to understand that a MODERATOR's main priority is to keep the FORUM healthy, there SECONDARY priority, which falls into a regular members first priority, is to help other peoples tanks healthy and make their brains get larger (figure of speach).

SH is a great example, he knows plenty of nanos, but doesnt have experience in larger tanks, yet he is a wonderful mod and has made the forums more and more appealing. What if someone knew everything about both large and small tanks but was a downright oversensitive jerk who thinks no one is right but him and doesnt listen to suggestions that members give him, would that make him a good mod?

Anyway, my vote would go for ski, hes been here for a while, hes nice, he makes good decisions, and is active. Ski has been there for me when i first started my tank and when i was all in question mode. He doesnt hold grudges, and to him nothing is personal. Ive never seen him insult, throw sarcastic remarks, or get deeply involved in stupid arguments on this forum, nor needs to have the last word to sleep at night, which many here, including me, have a problem with. Last but not least, he knows how to listen (or maybe read and register it properly into his brain as though he listened to it). So, my one and only vote goes to Ski.

Is what I say... moderating isn't all about knowledge. Though I still think it would be best if the mods were assigned to their best sections.

Ski would perhaps 'get my vote' except for one thing... he, SH and Nav would produce a fair bit of overlap in knowledge, with other crucial areas (such as SW preds) being left nearly uncovered. Then again, without Ski, things such as chemistry would be left similarly uncovered.

So I guess we can't win here can we?

I'm humbled by the compliments Ah yes, chicken or the egg. Is a good moderator made by his/her ability to be level-headed, keep peace, and in general keep a forum a fun place to learn and contribute? Or is a good moderator made by his/her knowledge about the subject over which his/her forum is centered around? Surely a good moderator has the capacity to maintain and encourage a quality atmosphere AND contribute knowledge to the forum. That being said, variety is the spice of life, and I do agree that having a few mods with varied areas of expertise would definitely be an asset to the forum.

I'm sure SH will find a few good candidates, and I'm humbled by your compliments.
