So I was at Petco, the third pet store I had visited that day, trying to find Dwarf Anubias and Thai Onion Plant(crinum thianaum). They didn't have it, which was fine, BUT, I go to the betta section and lo and behold, I find bettas in cups smaller than my 4-year-old nephew's juice glass!!!
This poor thing didn't have room to turn around, to do anything but flap his poor scrunched up fins and stay in the same position for hours!! It reminded me of the picture of the torture of the Iraqi prisoner that had to stand on a box!!

THEN, to add insult to injury, there was a little sticker on the shelf that said:
"Why are bettas kept in such tiny cups? Because in the wild they are used to tiny little puddles, blahblahblah" in so many words or less.

Well how about this, Petco?

"Why are bettas kept in such tiny cups? Because although Bettas originate from Thailand and were found in the puddles and trenches of rice paddies, where the water was always fresh and had the freedom to jump to whatever puddle or trench their little hearts deemed worthy, and no betta in it's right mind would STAY in a spot that small, now that we've taken them out of their natural habitat and bred them and pumped them out like they're newspapers to be thrown away once they're done entertaining us, we are too busy putting ads up about how good of a store we are to be concerned about the welfare of our poor fish. They may survive for sometime(rumor was that a betta survived in a plastic bag for a week once) but they're probably emotionally traumatized for life. Once you spend $5.69 on our fish, seek out an aquatic therapist ASAP, as said betta might have taken head trauma from repeatedly banging his(or her) head on the wall of the cup. I know I would.."

AARRRGGHHH! How DARE THEY!! And now for a flurry of smilies to show how i feel right now:

:grr: :flex:  :sly:    :< :byebye:

if you search through former posts here im sue you'll find dozens of angry members saying the exact thingd you said, its terrible and something has to be done btu no one is doing it

You should print that out and tape it over their sign instead of preaching to the choir. :)

Although, I have to add, fish don't have the equipment for emotional trauma.

That was as bad as a situation I saw in my lfs the other day. I was looking through the betta section and they had some of those stupid little betta cubes set up. There was one that had so much algae the water was a solid greed. I thought to myself "I hope there's not a betta in there" as I went over for a closer look. Well, there was. I imedeatly found an employee and asked for a manager. When the manager came over, I requested that the water be changed, and added, "I don't know about you, but I know I wouldn't like to live in a tiolet." I went back today for some aquarisol and was happy to see that all the tanks and betta cubes displaying betta were much, much cleaner. I wonder how long it will last.

That's exactly what I was thinking. :) that could be fun -- print them out and run all over town (Petsmart, Petco, Walmart, etc.) and tape them up when no one is looking. Haha.

Oh (off topic) AlexsDaddy -- Your icon!! You have SRT-4!?!!!

I have thought about taping things up, but at Animal Jungle (where I get my betta stuff from) They are now video taping the betta section. I guess people have been picking up the betta cups and they don't like it too much so taping something up there might not be such a good idea. Oh and yes I have an srt-4. It's an awesome car! :hooray: Sorry for the off topic everybody. :*)
