To be honest, I'd say sand is essential, not preferable. Spiny eels are very prone to mysterious bacterial infections, and these are incurable (at least not without access to antibiotics). The skin getting scratched by gravel seems to be a triggering factor.

CFC has written an excellent index card on spiny eels (though do read down the thread to confirm which species you have -- there is a great deal of confusion on this issue).

Finally, make absolutely sure the fish cannot escape. The fate of most spiny eels in captivity is to die dried up on the carpet. A tight fitting lid and floating plants are two things that will help here.

Cheers,

Neale

damn, i cant really get any sand atm, but i'll try, my eel is the striped one, siamensis, i think :/

P.S. tank is sealed up with tape :)
