Me and Koda jr were out getting pet stuff today.Naturally we had to look at the fish.In with the goldfish they had a strange looking creature with a cute chubby face,a plump body which narrowed to a wide tail...and on closer inspection, little stubs of forming legs!!Turned out to be some sort of tadpole which came in unordered with the fish. They were totally clueless about what sort of frog it might be.It was sort of speckled gold/brown and black and already rather large. They were selling it for 99 cents, same as the goldfish. It was so tempting, such a cute face and all, but I forced myself to look up what it might need and found that it might require a lot of live food....maybe even rodents. We didn't get it :-(

But it was a narrow escape

NO IT WOULD NOT HAVE!!!!

You should have gotten it. The biggest live food it you have to feed it is crickets, maybe worms. Mice are actually bad for frogs; they're too high in fat. Tadpoles, however, only eat ALGAE!!! I found two tadpoles in feeder fish aquariums just like that, and bought them for $.15 just like the feeders. I raised them in an aquarium, feeding them with regular algae tablets. At the time, I had every intention of returning them to the wild come spring (it was winter then) as full-fledged frogs. Unfortunately, they were too stupid and domesticated by that time to eat anything other than crickets and my fingers (thank goodness they don't have teeth!) so I ended up keeping them.

I have NEVER regretted it once!!! It opened me up into the world frog-keeping. I now own a pacman frog as well.

What you saw was a bullfrog tadpole. You ought to go back there and get it. I'm telling you, it is SO fun to watch them grow up into frogs!! Then to hear their first attempts at singing (sounds like a really weird, really loud belch at first) and then to hear them singing along with your music (they do that sometimes!!). Just to watch them is fun.

I LOVE frogs!!!

If you get it--PLEASE do, it'll die in that aquarium!!!--you can just ask me any questions you have about keeping frogs.

LOL :D Be Glad You Did'nt Get It Though, Would Have Eaten Your Other Fish!
Possibly even as a tadpole it would be able to eat just about any fish I have except my fantail. They said it was growing really fast too.And eventually it would have needed a a habitat where it could get out of the water....and hop to the fridge

NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!!! What did I just say?

TADPOLES ONLY EAT ALGAE. They couldn't eat your fish if they wanted to. By the time they start to mature into full-fledged frogs, you can have them in their own aquarium. Even then, most fully-fledged frogs won't touch your fish!! They much prefer bugs. I successfully kept a small shoal of feeder guppies in my Gren Frog tank for the longest time, and the frogs never bothered them once. It is also really easy to set up a tank for a water frog!!! They are also colder-weather frogs, so you don't have to worry about lighting or heating. They don't even need a bubbler, although it isn't a bad idea. All they need is a small island of pebbles and maybe something to hide under. They don't need any more than that!!!

if u really wanted to get it they have stuff u can put in ur tank to let it get up on. i saw it at petsmart. but it was made for turtles so check it out.

it would be really kool to have a duel fish/frog tank. hehe B)

Sorry...we must have been posting at the same time as I did not see yours before I posted mine. For 99 cents it might be worth getting just for the fun of seeing it morph into a frog.Koda jr would love it

But I can't see getting it unless I can be responsible for providing proper care and I am not sure I could give it all that it will need.

It's just that we have such a houseful now,and Koda jr is always on the prowl for more critters.Currently he is after me for a hamster and a gecko

And I'm still amazed at how one little betta hooked us into having fish in every room in the house except the bathroom

I sure wouldn't pay $1 for a tadpole! They are fascinating to watch them turn from a little swimming dot with a tail into a frog/toad... but I wouldn't want to keep one in an aquarium either :( If your son really wants some, I can look and see if there are any toad tadpoles in my grandparents pond and I could ship you some. I think they usually lay their eggs in early spring, and this year we had an EARLY warm streak, so chances are it's way too late in the year for them.... but next spring there will be thousands of little tadpoles in their big goldfish pond. I can tell you what they'll be when they grow up too.... toads... Bufo Americanus

They're ugly and they get big once they grow up, but it can be fun to watch, especially for a little boy :) I spent many many hours outside at that pond when I was growing up, and my newphews do the same thing now.
