I was looking in my cupboard and I found a fish treatment called methylene blue and it says on the box that it neutralizes nitrate in the tank. Could I use this to speed up my fishless cycle?

I don't think so but good idea though. ;)

Brilliant treatment for bathing fish in for 5-10 mins but it has a delightful side effect of wiping out a good deal of bacteria in the filter. A nice mature tank might withstand it and cycle through but tbh... i wont ever try it again for sure. Use it regularly when acclimatising new fish though.

What are you talking about? Do you mean the fish bath I was talking about in the other thread. If so than you didn't read it correctly. I said to take a gallon OUT of the tank and put it into a bucket.

The methylene blue gives the fish a "bath" ;)

Ah I see. Thanks for the info I thought it was something else. ;)

 maybe no one else treats fish outside of the tank?

Meth Blue is great if the fish has a mild fungal/bacterial/parasite problem but its no good for putting in tanks as it kills the bacteria in the filter...

So you take out water from the tank (into a bucket or something), add the meth blue (double/triple dose), stir, add fish, wait 5-10 minutes then pop fish back into tank...

Or when acclimatising new fish... add a drop or two to the bag the fish is acclimatising in and dont put that water in the tank.

Put simply... the answer is 'no' it wont cycle your filter, just screw up the cycle :p

Methylene blue is used for A LOT of stuff from fish treatment to dye

Yeah that sounds similar to what I was referring to except you use salt instead of that. :)
