A Little Concerned...

Is it just me, or does the forum seem a little... less friendly lately? I don't know... I only mention it because I care about this forum, and maybe it's only the winds of change blowing and it will pass, but I was a little shocked to learn that long-time member Jessica13 had been banned, and apparently freshmike has been permabanned as well and doesn't know why (his posts have been moderated for some time now, but the permaban is new). Forgive me if this business is too private, and feel free to delete this post, but I am honestly concerned.

The thing that comes to mind reading your post, is that I'm confused. Do you mean the members are being less friendly, and so getting themselves banned? or do you mean the staff are? Just wanted to clarify

When members are consistently negatively outspoken, stir or flame and openly aggressive towards to mods, they will get banned. From my point of view, (mods) reasons entirely just – and the only unfriendliness are from those who were banned.

from experience, i was threatened to be banned by a mod when i questioned his authority.
lesson learn, do not question the mods
as one of the mod said 'they have the badge to prove it'

I'm not pointing any fingers, just saying that's the way it feels to me these days and I'm honestly not entirely sure what the cause is. I would like to know why freshmike was permabanned though (and so would he, lol,) apparently he tried to post some betta pics a few days ago and that's what drew attention to his account again.

I'm with Synirr on this one it does seem that things have gotten out of hand, I dont see why Jessica 13 was banned as she was being honest about her feelings and I agree with how she felt about what was said in a previous post and I dont see why she should be banned for just that one off occurence. Surely it shouldnt be down to just one mod to ban a member and that it should be discussed between the mods as well as the person that they ban (IMO)

There are also quite a few members on this forum who seem to constantly tell people things in a not so helpful manner. It does seem that the wind has changed and that instead of people helping one another they seem to be criticising rather than trying to be polite and helpful.

Ever since I've joined I've seen people like that. I've gotten pointers from very nice people too, mostly. Its nothing new - maybe your just seeing it in more "established" members?

I think people can be jumped on, especially when they're doing something incredibly stupid with their fish, or stocking, or whatever. I tend to think that people should be given credit for actually coming here and asking... and caring about their fish... because alot of people buy them as ornaments and couldn't care less about their wellbeing. Some allowances must be made for people who take the advice of their LFS, as one would ASSUME those people knew what they were talking about so it isn't fair to have a go at people for taking everything the LFS say for fact.

I haven't been here long, but I do think some particular forums are friendlier than others and some people do have a very patronising approach to newbies. /

Freshmike was banned after an unprovoked and scathing attack on me, i cant link you to the post as its in the moderators files but here it is copy and pasted for all to see. this was posted during the early hours of the morning GMT when he knew that the least amount of moderating staff would be online.

This has been a long time comin'....but, things have been harsh between us and I just want to say CFC, you are a ####ING LOSER!!!!

Oh, ya, if you ban me....change your skin from my fish on your main board on the dark skin, cuz I don't want it on here...and you need my permission to use my pics....but yeah, you are a complete fag CFC, you are a loser and a HUGE headed muther####er, and deserve the hypocritical stereotype of "fish-geek" and should die alone in an alley....you fag. I used to like this forum, poor me.

This goes for a few more ppl on here, but I won't mention names, I am sure you know who you are....(you know how much of a loser you are)

Such a pleasent fellow, i really cant see why we banned him, oh yeah its because he's a complete idiot At the time we had limited controls and used the maximum force that mods could deliver which was the mod queue on all posting, and then we forgot about him. Since he started posting again he brought attention to himself and so was hit with our new increased powers. We dont forgive and we dont forget.

Jessica 13 was also previously banned and slipped through the net having rejoined under a new name, unfortunately her attack on me in Jobys thread in buy sell swap brought her to Williams attention and he banned her again before i even had the chance to suspend her account.

agreed, at least if people are coming on and asking it's better than nothing. when I started out I made some horrendus mistakes on the advice of lfs's.

There are occasions when you have to be a little bit harsh with people, I've done it myself just today.

Someone posted a very unsuitable stocking list weeks ago, I advise one fish would probably eat the others and to re-consider it, and oh look someone's got eaten and they want to know why. Well what do you expect, it's a blatant disregard for the animals welfare so sometimes you do need to be a bit harsh just to get the message across.

But I don't think any of this is a new thing to TFF

Thanks for clearing that one up on why Jessica 13 got banned but I still think it is slightly harsh but thats my opinion. I think what happened in that thread on buy sell and swap did get way out of hand which is why I waited for something to come up here. I see both sides to what went on in that thread and semi agree with both parties I just think it could have been sorted out much more diplomatically and through PM's.

I've not visited any other fish forum except this one and I still think it is a good site despite all the horrible responses, it's a shame that the mods dont seem to contact any of the people who are out of hand there are way too many posts however there are many who are very nice on here.

It's always been our intentions to keep TFF "The Friendliest Fish Forum Around."

To our great dismay, over the years, some our members have not respected our commitment. While we give everyone the benefit of the doubt, and in most cases they get many chances to change their ways, there have been times when we did eventually have to take drastic action to put an end to the problems they have caused. We could ban them or restrict their posting privileges for a period of time.

While doing this does not make us happy, it's necessary for the good of the forum and its members. While a single Mod has to be the one to do the job, it is with the knowledge and support of all the others and the Admin.

Be assured that we are only accountable to William for the actions we take, not to any of the members. I, for one, do not look favorably upon anyone who tries to put one of the other Mods on the spot and make him or her explain their actions.
