Well I decided to try something new today, instead of replacing my filter cartridge in my penguin-bio-wheel with a new one I decided to throw in some filter fiber I had laying around and see how it worked. Well I put in enough to make the wheel spin and so far it's doing great. All that is different then the regular cartridges is there is no carbon. Before you decide to do this let me finish expierementing to make sure it's works good but if you want to do it to you can. It's a lot cheaper for me :hey: and is a lot easier. Let me know if you do this, see any flaws, or are going to try it.

already doing it on all tanks, adding a plastic mesh or something behind it that still allows the water flow will help keep the filter from bending and stuff

Been doing this for years. I get the coarse pond filter inserts, 4"x4"x12" foam, and cut them to fit. Stuff in a little floss & it's done.

This is what I am using
Polyester Filtering Material: 100% pure polyester is ideal for wet / dry filtration units and safe for all freshwater & marine aquariums - Available in 2 oz., 4 oz., 7 oz., 14 oz., and 10 lb. bulk packages.
from here
I just take a handfull and stuff it in the filter part in my bio-wheel 200 and it seems to be doing ok for now.

if it works then it works, i feel you will get a better flow rate though through your filter if you find a way to better duplicate your factory filter as i did. the filter media will begin to move closer and closer to your biowheel if it doesnt have anything to support it. Eventually after it can move anymore it will slow the rate of water flowing through it. by putting something behind it to keep it straight, i feel you will get a better consistant rate of flow through your media giving you and your aquarium a more steady enviroment. This is just my opinion, no test have been done to prove this to my knowledge.

Well I checked it out today, and its got a lot of junk on it which is good, and it's not moving either, I put in enough of it so that it wouldn't move but not to much so that water still flows through, saves more time then putting it on a cartridge. Well I guess we will see who's method works better or if they work the same.
