I just did a massive gravel cleaning for my 42g and it was just a massive battle that I somewhat lost. I managed to get some of the junk out with the siphon tube thingy but not near what I had hoped to be able to get out. Those siphon things loose their effectiveness as the water goes down I think cuzz I couldnt get any after 50%. Even if I was able to still get it, the siphon tube doesnt do that great of a job....

Im curious, do any of you fish guru's do/use anything different? :(

You either need to lower the bucket you siphon into, or raise the tank. If it is on a standard height stand, you need to lower the bucket. If the hose isn't long enough, you can buy longer hose of the proper diameter at any hardware or diy shop. If it is a lower tank, you need a smaller diameter vac to hose ratio.

I have a python and the gravel cleaner on it is excellent. I've also got one of those basic tubes with plastic pipe syphons and even though the tube is really narrow it has pretty good suction on it, enough to pull up crushed coral sand which isn't very light.

Ive got a gravel hoover that sits on the edge of the tank. You have a siphon tube similar to a normal gravel cleaner but instead of it siphoning the water out into a bucket it puts it though a filter to get all the bits out and it is pumped back into the tank....
