My Quarantine Tank was missing a Dwarf Gourami this morning... :(

My inner pessimist told me that it was all going too well, so a death was inevitable. Sadly, it was the distinctly larger of the three. The other two were fine.
I couldn't find the body.

It's only a small cube, 48 litres.
No body behind the plants...nowhere to be seen.

So I carefully and painstakingly removed the plants.
The lid's a tight fit...no gap at all, but I still carefully checked the carpet, all around the base of the tank...no body, though I did glare at the kitty, who was, as usual, most interested in my activities.

Stuck my syphon pipe in, to remove a small amount of stuff that had gathered in my refuse corner.

Three dwarf Gourami looking at me.

I was reminded of Schrodinger's Cat.
I believe I have the beggar's fish...and it has Quantum Mechanics all sewn up.

After a nice sit down and a cup of tea, I reflected awhile...
I suspect I missed the live fish simply because I was looking for a body.

This happens to the best of us sometimes.

I've done the exact same, had 5 black bar endlers in a 3 foot tank, could only see 3 of them, searched everywhere, looked amongst all the plants, down on the floor, under the cabinet, looked at the cat with suspicion as well.

In the end I said to my other half -
"looks like have lost 2 endlers, can't find their bodies anywhere, the shrimps, snails and other fish must have eaten their bodies quickly, oh well!, well we will just have to go to the shop and get a few more..."

She then simply pointed to the tank and said -
"there's 5 endlers in there........"

I looked at tank and cue the dumfounded look on my face!

One time i had a swarm of 8 cherry shrimp in one of my tanks. I could not find one of them! After a few days of not seeing them i thought they were dead. 3 days later i saw one with no head. I was confused and shocked. The next day i saw my pesky little betta chasing the other 7.

the next day

WARNING, DO NOT READ THIS PARAGRAPH IF YOU GET SCARED EASILY:

The next day i saw a cherry shrimp head on the substrate, there were now 6 survivors. Next i saw samurai eat one of them in 3 chomps, it was hard to look at. I rehomed 4 of them, they are still alive today.

SCARED PEOPLE MAY READ AGAIN:

I rehome 4 of them wich are stilll alive today, thing is, i missed the 5th one. Because i t was a juvenile. It was no more than 5mm. I noticed the baby a few days after the tragedy when samurai was chasing the poor thing around the tank. I stufed the net in, spent half an hour strying to catch the baby, and god i felt good when i did. They all now live happily in a small tank with 2 nerite snails and the 5 shrimp. The baby gets bigger everyday!

THE END.

I have done this same thing a couple of times in my 55, when I do my morning count. Carefully count the pearls and freak out when I only see 4. Try moving around plants and hardscape. Mourn all day at work. Get home and do my feeding, all of a sudden I have 5 pearl gourami again.
