what size of tank do they need ?? what do they eat ?? thanks

For one axolotl I would recommend a 2ft tank minimum, anymore than that and I would add at least 1ft extra tank space. My axolotl east frozen and live bloodworm, earth worms and sometimes chopped prawns. Basically they eat things that are meaty, I used to feed him on live brineshrimp when he was 3" long.

Your lucky that you don't seem to need a chiller. A friend of mine went in to Axies in a big way spent a fortune but they all kept slowly dying off, the only thing we could put it down to was she couldn't keep the temp in the tanks low enough and after spending so much on actaully buying the Axies (around $40ea), the tanks, the sand, the filters, the hideyholes and of course food she couldn't afford a $800 chiller as well. I had axolotls years ago without drama and would like to get them again but I think it really is just too hot where I live and my husand has a new mantra - "NO MORE FISH OR DIFFERENT SPECIES OF FISH". Shame I couldn't convice him its a tadpole and not a fish so doesn't fall under his "NO" campaign

. Your Ax is lovely, have you thought about trying to breed them? My friend who had quite a few did get them to breed even hatched some eggs and the fry (?) where surviving until she had to go away for a few days and of course all the bubs perished. A shame really and now she has given up on Axies and keeping tropical fish.

In the name of God, what is that? I'm really intrigued by it, does it have eyes?

its an axolotl, a strange critter. in essence its a salamander that does not mature, leaving it in a perpetual state of childhood (i guess). fantastic critters though, very playful, and mischievous. originally they come from one area in Mexico. though it has now been developed, i thinks some survive in the wild, still.

they have great powers!! as they are made up of T cells, they can grow new legs, tails well any part of themselves, leaving almost no scare, even so they are not Indestructible. I would also council using a 2 foot tank. but one thong is for sure, you need to do a lot of research.

Was that for me or the other person because I did do a lot of research... I've had him approximately 6-8 months.
As for breeding them, I have though about it but it would mean getting a 3ft tank and keeping Alex in that until I can get a female that I can grow out till she's at least 10". Alex will be growing quickly with an appetite like his, yes he is very playful.

Thanks Jenste.
After he had finished scouring the bottom for more bloodworm I got these decent(sort of) pictures with his gills being bright red-ish pink. As you can see, there are still some on the bottom which he had cleaned up within an hour or two. He looks like he's always smiling... It was dark and I had to use a sort of spotlight to see him.

lovely pics

I;ve often thought about giving these a whirl but never got round to it

They are lovely creatures. The eggs go for a few quid on ebay as well if you ever did get round to breeding them.

There was a programme on sky recently about them in the wild and they hunted the canals they lived in in mexico for ages trying to find a wild one and although they managed to find one or two there natural habitat is struggling as its close to a large mexican city and theres lots of pollution etc harming them

Yeah I heard that they were critically endangered in the wild, even searched it up when I heard it. I would breed them but like I said, getting 2 3ft's and 1 4ft isn't really an option in my house... I'm already pushing the limit by getting 1 3ft and 1 4ft. Maybe it will have to wait till I have my own apartment, then I can leave my fish at my mums house and breed the axolotl's at my house... Also I think I got a bargain on him because I got him for £8 then a few weeks after I got him, his friend who I had to leave at the shop(poor guy) went up to £13.

Your axolotl is gorgeous -lovely cute photos. Is he a leucistic with pink eyes? That is very rare.

Mine is a boy too, similar to yours but has black eyes. He's more than doubled in size since I got him last Aug and is now 10.5in - hope he stops growing!Mine loves earthworms from the compost bin but when they are hiding in winter he also eats prawns and clams. It's useful to have a store of freezedried bloodworm and JMC catfish pellets too for when you can't get hold of worms and fresh food. Mine wil eat pellets if you drop them right in front of his nose and will jump up to catch them. Very funny to watch him do this.

I bought mine from someone who hatched and raised a batch of axo eggs he bought on Ebay as a project and had to rehome most of them when they were 4in long. They were £5 each -bargain!
