Hi,

I have been directed here for advice.

I have a 75 Gallon Tank.

I am looking to get a canister type filter and wondering what filter media would be best?

I have my heart set on 2 filters. (always a fan of backup precautions).

I heard tetratec is getting good value for money ratings.

Can you help me?

I am limited to a budget of $100 I could go a little further.

Thank you in advance.

I'm not sure if you will find a decent sized external canister filter for that price, you might but it depends on what is available near you. I would put sponges in a couple of compartments and maybe some noodles or ceramic beads in another.

Thank you ...

What if I just go for one I couldn't get anything for around $120

if you can get a decent filter for $120 then go for it. One filter should be adequate but if it needs cleaning more than once a month you will need to get another.

Where are you based? The fact that you gave your budget in $ tells me you might not be able to get Tetratecs, as as far as I'm aware they are only available in the UK and Canada... Eheim are well regarded on here, but I doubt you will find one that will suit a 75g piranha tank for your budget...

Piranha are seriously messy fish as you probibly know  We have a group of 10 at my place of work ATM, and the block a 6ftX2ft UGF filter system on a fortnightly basis, thats when feeding conservatively... I feel sorry for whomever buys them and grows them from the 6 inch their at to full size arround a feet a piece, assuming they care for them correctly  .

Like I mentioned in your other thread, a Eheim 2080 should be able to cope with the mess well, and would give serious overfiltration, which is good. Keeping flow down could be interesting as the fish aren't going to like lots of movement  The issue is a 2080 will cost way more than $120 unless you get gear extreamly cheap over your way...

I think you need to look at other brands. Fluval's aren't any good, apart from the un-poven long-term wise FX5, Rena don't seem to do reliable well with their larger models, bringing me round to Aqua one... I have never used Aqua one's but they are the only exturnal I can think of in your budget, and available in your area (I think??) that I haven't heard any negativity about. My be because few use them though, which kind of rings alarm bells for me...

All the best
Rabbut

Is this one piranha a red belly? because it would be alot happier in a shoal of at least 6

I belive Tim is keeping red bellies, but unfortunately this is an old thread, so he may not see that advise  Even though I agree :good:
