Hey all, my dad and I have finally set-up our saltwater tank, we've decided to go with a 72 gallon bowfront tank oppsed to the original 120gallon. Yes a fair bit of a down size, but it was his choice not mine. Now, I was told that the maximum amount of fish I would be able to have in the tank, with a heavy load of corals would be 8, is this accurate? I was thinking of about 9 myself because I used the 2 gallons per 1" of fish, and most (if not all) of the fish we'll be getting will get to be no bigger than 3-4", I think the biggest may be 5" or 4.5".

So, 8 fish or 9 fish total?

neither, dont go by saying fish, there are all sorts of fish in the world, What fish is my question to you.

I'm aware, which is why I gave the general sizes of the fish and was hoping for some advice based upon the rule of thumb. Sorry, but I am not 100% sure what fish we'll be keeping, I know a pair of clown fish and that's about it.

well its hard because you could say you wanted 4 mandarin fish (eh not too sure about size but i think 4-5") but if you got 4 they would A. Starve or B. Beat each other to death.

There are too many variables. Take a look around at fish and maybe some very basic compatibility charts, when you get the general idea, ask us again.

I'm not new to the saltwater game, I had my 29gallon nano set-up for quiet some time and now we've gotten a larger tank, I'm aware of what can be compatable, I just needed to know a general range of how many fish I could have in the tank. So, since you're not going to give me a response unless I give you ever name (probably scientific ones too), the size of the fish and the tank mates, I'll request that you don't respond to me as (I am sorry) but your advice is being a bit harsh and making me doubt my abilities, this is also known as CYBER BULLYING!

NOW my question remains the same in a tank of 72gallons, heavily stocked with coral (assuming all tank mates are compatable etx.) how many fish could I have maximum?

sorry number of fish depends on type of fish

how many is a 'how long is a bit of string question'

is that US or Imperial gallons?

if you cant take advise, then what are you doing here? Someones siggy here says something like i am unaware of everyones experiance level, i will give advise to everyone i can even if they already know it, telling something to someone twice is not as bad as not telling at all or something like that. How would i have known that you have "experiance". Put whatever you want in that tank, i dont care. I hope you fail, and yes, what i just said here IS cybe bullying, but before, it was advise.

1 or 40
what do you like?
not all fish have the same bioload
you could put like 30 Green Reef Chromis
Ter

bit harsh musho wishing someone to fail really isnt it, what comes around goes around.

anyways gettins on with it i recon with good filtration steady stocking you could fit more then 8 in specially since at 4-5 inches there not gonna be a major blow to the bioload. i have a 50us gallon tank and i was gonna have 8 small fish in with only a few corals, i would say if you want loads of corals though keep it safe with 8-10 small.

o and buy a small wrasse :D a flasher preferbly :p

8 - 10 at 4-5" would be way to much for a 52 gallon

As I said it depends on the fish

If you were thinking along the lines of a couple of Percula or Ocellaris clowns, chromis, dwarf angels, grammas, neon gobies and other smallish fish you will be fine with 8-10

If on the other hand you want fish that will grow bigger you will need to reduce the numbers

It's a 72gallon, small fish (as said) compatable species too, all I need is a general range and I believe that I got that, 6-9 fish at the aboslute max, thanks guys.

And Musho, as said, wishing somebody to fail is a bit harsh, what goes around does come around. I'm not upset with your views, it's just that your advice comes a bit harsh, STD was able to tell me the same thing but in much softer and nicer words. I personally wish you and your fish nothing but the best, it seems asthough you have some anger issues when somebody decides to stand up to you, oh well, your problem not mine. Once again Musho, I wish you and your fish nothing but the best :good: :)
