hi,

i have a 70l hex tank, and was looking to get a few snails in there, the tank is a community set up with about 7 live plants, mostly amazon sword, java fern and anubias..There is also a small bit of moss attached to a slate.

Was looking at maybe getting giant ramshorn, apple snail, zebra snail, assasin snail...i do have a few pest snails but i get rid of these by the cucumber trick and also crushing them and letting the fish eat them.

The fish in there at the moment have been well established for about 2.5 months and the tank has been running for well over a year now, so it matured.

Was hoping for some advice on the compatbility of the any of the snails with: 6 neon tetra, 6 black phantoms, 1 dwarf gourami, 1 small BN and 2 silver tipped tetra, and also whether or not they will destroy the live plants i have in there, and any requirements they need, i have hard water so ph is not a problem...also algae is never really a problem in the tank.

Also water quality is top notch

ammonia: 0
nitrite:0
nitrate 10

cheers

1 apple snail wont breed and wont eat your plants they are also conpatible with your fishies

ramshorns are prolific breeders if you get one you'll end up with lots

you could get 2 or 3 apple snails as if you manage to get male and females and they do breed they lay their eggs out of the water so you can remove the clutches of eggs if you dont want baby snails

great response cheers! think im gonna get an apple snail tonight! what about zebra snails i do like the look of them..and also assasin snails?

do they add to the bioload much and also do they eat algae or do they prefer vegetables?

nerites (zebra)are the same as apple snails they are either male or female but they're young can only grow in brackish water so you wont have a prob with them reproducing
i know they can eat brown, blue and green spot algae if they want to ;)

assasin snails will eat or attempt to eat every snail in your tank so i would avoid them if you are getting apple or nerite snails

Snails dont add much to the bioload and will eat some algae and waste food but you should still supplement their with either veg or algae wafers

yea i wanted cherry's to start with my but the local MA hardly has them in, he only had amano and moutain shrimp that were a lot bigger,

one of the shrimps has already moulted so i guess thats a good thing! will they breed quickly>?

amanos breed in freshwater but their young will only survive if removed and added to salt water
