I just got a 55 gallon tank and I'm wondering what you guys suggest adding to the tank, I know suggestions for smaller tanks but this is my first big tank. Also what would be a good fish to cycle with in this tank. Thanks in advanced.

what kind of fish are you interested in? or is it just a 'what people think'

id get a school of zebra danios to cycle with and keep them they are very active fish and a school of cories. they're fun to watch swim around in their groups

I'd cycle with ammonia... see the link in my signature - No Fish! :) If you have an established tank you can do an instant cycle by adding old filter media and gravel/ornaments from your old tank when you add your first few fish - then monitor levels and you should find everything's perfect.

Are you asking what I'd personaly put in the tank or what you should put in it?

I'd go for a badis badis species tank because that's actualy something I plan to do pretty soon :p
Or a pearl gourami species tank ;) I LOVE those fish... muahahaha... their gonna rule the world :p

Anyway...

What sort of fish are you interested in?

Do you want large fish, small fish, shoaling, peaceful, active, territorial, unusual, colorful, species tank, community, cichlids, from a particular part of the world, themed, planted, rocky, river, lots of fish, just a few etc?

I really don't want to do fishless cycling because I'd like to have something to look at for 2 and half weeks lol.. Plus I'm just not sure on the amount of drops and uh, I don't know lol..

Also I just want to know what fish would be good to cycle with that I could keep, any fish that has some color to it. I'm not too picky. :) Also how many of those fish. Oh yah whats the max inches of fish per every other week or so to add.

It takes a lot more time to cycle WITH fish than without so you may have something to look at but it'll have to be a couple of platies or zebra danios for 6 weeks.
If you do a fishless cycle you can cycle within those 2.5 weeks you mentioned and add more fish more quickly.
As for the amounts, use fish food and add the amount you would have fed the fish (if you had any) every other day. Monitor your water parameters until your tank is cycled and then do a huge water change and gravel vacuum and add the fish. Very easy, much quicker and has no long-term complications to your fish's health like cycling with fish does.
As I said before, if you have an established tank you need not worry about cycling at all in the first place - just borrow a little filter media from your old tank and add 5 zebra danios.

I don't have an old tank so I can't do that. The only thing I have is clear ammonia which is was using with my other tank.

So you've already cycled another tank? Or are in the process of cycling?
All you need to do to find out how much ammonia to add is set up your new tank and put in say a couple of tea spoons of ammonia. Test your water for ammonia. If it's at 5 you can remember you added 2 teaspoons and do so from then on (daily) until your tank has cycled (o ammonia/nitrItes, high nitrAtes). If it hasn't yet got to 5 when you first test, add more and test again. Just reccord the amount (in tea spoons for example) you add on the first day and keep adding that amount daily until your tank has fully cycled. Then do a very large water change to remove the now excessive nitrAtes and add fish :)

So if you add 5 tea spoons of your ammonia and test your water and find you have about 5ppm, add another 5 tea spoons the next day. Do so until your ammonia reads 0, your nitrIte reads 0 and your nitrAtes are high. Then time for a huge water change (with de-chlorinated water) and fish. Easy :)

Does the 4-5 drops of ammonia per 10 gallons work and then cut in half when you get a nitrite spike. Or is it just slower then adding enough ammonia to get it up to around 3PPM and doing that everyday.

Is it alright if the reading is around 3-4 PPM does it have to be 4-5 PPM?
