I'm going to have built my first reef aquarium. I've decided on a 55 gallon to get my feet wet. Would you experienced veterans give me your thoughts on what's best for length, width and height.

Try and keep it to no more than 20 inches tall. Other than that, you can choose your length and width of the base or style (bow/corner/custom) to your liking. Keeping it 20" or less makes it easier to work in and reach the bottom with your hands :)

your best bet is the 50 breeder, its shallow so its easier to work with and light. Its wider so its easier to stack rock, and its not too long either.

Long, low and wide ;)

Long - Looks better
Low - Easier to illuminate and allows greater range of corals (and easier to do maintenance)
Wide - Allows better aquascaping of live rock without compromising swimming space
