As the topic states I have a 55 gallon tank that measures 48' x 12 wide x 20.5 high and a 400 emporer filter. Wanted 2 oscar but i guess the bioload of them is a little high for this size of tank. If i cant get 2 oscars what suggestions do you have for fish to inhabit this tank? I was thinking about maybe one Oscar and maybe a jd and some other scholling fish like some silver dollars or something. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks guys.

It's not so much a matter of bioload (though that's definitely an issue as well).

More importantly, 2 oscars... or 1 oscar and 1 JD... will have massive and almost certainly unavoidable conflict in the long run.

A 55g tank is appropriate for 1 lone Jack Dempsey. Some might say it's appropriate for 1 lone Oscar. I disagree, but it's possible. Either way, the key word here is LONE.

What you really need to ask yourself is: Do I want a single "wet pet" for my 55g tank or do I want a community? If the answer is community, drop the idea of the JD or Oscar and consider smaller fish. You can even still do aggressive (have you considered Convicts?) if you want, just not 8-12" aggressive. We're always happy to help find appropriate stocking plans.

Edit: BTW, Welcome to TFF! Please make yourself at home!

Thanks for the help. Im thinking about the one oscar and maybe some smaller cummonity fish. I got a ? I cant find the answer to anywhere... Are pirahnas actually illegal in all of the US or just some states?

I have a feeling Oscar might regard the smaller community fish more in the light of a nourishing snack. As for piranhas, I think they are illegal in some states, not in others.

erm I make that 193.62 Liters or 51.15 US Gallons and that is the volume of air.
water volume will be less due to displacement of substrate, decorations and where the water line ends (you don't fill tanks to the very top)

Sorry I don't think any of the fish you are thinking of wil be suitable for that tank due to it's width.

how about a school of rainbowfish or tetras of some kind?

I used to have an Oscar in that same size tank - after 8 months he did not have the room to turn around - he would have to bend his tail - I strongly suggest something else for that size tank.. its just not wide enough for a full grown oscar.
