was sitting there thinking yesterday (when i was supposed to be working of course) about what i'd put in a 55 gal FW if i got one. my boyfriend was with me at lfs that had one with a gorgeous cabinet stand and canopy (lovely oak one), and the price was GREAT, and he actually oooo'd and aaaah with me a minute. so knowing that he wouldn't mind a setup like in the living room got me to thinking about it. what on earth would i want in there? :shifty: so i'm asking you all, who have 50/55gal tanks, what all do you keep together in each one?
just curious!
thanks

currently a mixture cos i just couldnt make my mind up

2 platty
1 red tailed black shark
and a partridge in a pair tree.. :)

You should consider a regional biotope tank for something that size. I'm looking at a 72G tank in the next month or so. I've been considering either an Asian or South American biotope tank... containing only fish from that specific region.

It really depends if you have some really specific fish that you'd  to get. See if you can find more types from that region and make a nice biotope.

I have found it harder to "plan" a general community tank because of the water requirements for fish in different global regions.

3 pl*cos and about 25 platys- fry glut! Once some of the platy fry get bigger I'll trade them at the LFS for store credit. Told my son that if if we raise 1000 of 'em we'll have enough credit to get a puppy! My wife wants to kill me.

After moving my tanks and such Ive finally set my 55 back up. currently there are

3 angels
10 neons
6 panda cories
1 candy stripe pleco
1 striped raphael
1 gold mystery snail
1 dwarf flame gourami

Most will say that some of these species dont get along but I have never had a problem.

I keep 2 fish in my 55 in one half I have a Jack Dempsey in one half and a Wild Gold Suam in the other half. I also have a 8 inch pelco and an apple snail, and 6 giant albino danios in there as well

At the moment there are 2 pearl gouramis, 2 blue gouramis, 9 half grown blue gouramis, 2 weather loaches, a handfull of guppies and 6 glowlight tetras. :D

All those blue gouramis look great against the green plants.

when i get my first fish tank (soon, very soon) it'll be about 50 gallons, and this is what i plan to put in it:

3 guppies
15 neon tetra
8 glowlight tetra
6 cory (ones that don't get too big)
1 bristlenose pleco

personally i'd forego the guppies, but my better half likes them. i think they kinda look a bit scruffy, even though they can have beautiful tails

In a tank that size I'd probably be looking at keeping some Cichlids. I've done the community tanks now and must admit I love the individuality of either oddballs like puffers or some of the cichlids.

I have one big cichlid in my 50, he takes up the whole place and IMO he's more interesting to watch than a tank FULL of fish ;)

I've got Blood parrots, tiger barbs and lions cove labs in my 50. Bit of a mixture as the lions cove are african and the tigers are from asia (and I know that BP's are not many people's cup of tea). One day I'd like to have a tank with upside-down-catfish, congo tetras, rosy barbs, kuhli loaches, kribs and dwarf gouramis - too many fish and not enough tanks!!. I'm not a fan of the 'themed' idea that people go for as I don't think they're not as natural as people believe. For example most would say that my labs should be with african mbuna - but been there done that and they got ripped apart, similarly the barbs can't really be kept with asian fish like gourami's or long finned danios etc. Probably worth thinking whether you want a few big fish or lots of little ones though. I love my medium sized labs and barbs.....
