damn....... i have no idea what kind of fish to get for my new 5 gallon, i want to get some fish after christmas but what kind? i'm thinking about neon tetras, gromies, one male betta, deffinetly some snails to feed to my puffer. i know i want to get some snails but witch are the easiest to breed and the quikest growers. and wich of the fish i mentioned are the cleanest, more active, and would suit the 5 gallon perfect? thank you for your help, i needed some idea. :D ( name any others wich you think would be better )

just get some pond snails easy to pick up there small and once they get going they dont stop

Hi A.K.A. Zak :)

Well, your tank is on the small side, so you can't have too many fish in there. I think a betta and 3 or 4 corys would be nice, though.

I'd say that if you mean to put all you suggested in the 5, it won't work so well. That would be either overstocking or unhappy fishies! Neons need a school of about 6-8 so just having enough of them would be too many for the tank. A Dwarf Gourami would work, I had one in a 5 for awhile and now in my 6 - works well. However, I wouldn't put him with a betta - they most likely would see each other as competition and someone would get hurt. -_- You could always have some livebears in your 5 - guppies or platies maybe? They would get along with a dwarf gourami also - I keep mine together. Cherry barbs are also wonderful little fish and a pair of them will go with most fish.

thanks your help, but will any of those fish eat a snail or snail eegs and snail fry? and how come no one ever trys to pu a male and female betta together? oh, and how many at max of neon teras can i put in the 5 gallon?

i don't think you should worry abut those fish eating the snails. i know that pufferfish, clown loaches, some species of cichlids and catfish, eat them though. but bettas will eat the eggs. and you can put male and female betta together if you want them to breed obviously but otherwise they will fight and might kill each other. and if you're thinking about neon tetras, who by the way are really beautiful, i think you can safely put 5-7 of them in your tank, provided, no more fish go in

thanks man, i think i'm going to put 7 neons in my tank to get maximum coloration, and how long do you think i need to wait for the tank to cycle for the neons, i added a tank decoration from a nother tank i had, it should speed up the process.

who are you calling man? :p you're doing the fishless cycle? then it's probably gonna take 2-3 weeks. but if you want neons, you have to make sure the water is perfect before adding them to the tank. these fish are really sensitive but so worthwhile. good luck :)

My daughter is breeding snails in her 10G. She has apple, mystery and ramshorn snails. The ramshorn snails are by far the easiest to breed and grow pretty quickly. There are only 2 adults in the tank and they are constantly laying eggs. Tons of baby snails. I'd also consider some ghost shrimp for your 5g. They are so cool. They will also eat any food that falls to the bottom and don't count in the fish per gallon rule. You can get them at petsmart for 29 cents a piece. Great little guys. I'd get 3 or 4 for a 5 gal. My daughter has 6 in her 10G. She has one that will actually swim to the surface to be hand fed.

Neons usually only get to be one inch in length. Remember the one inch per gallon rule is not including the tail. I'd say you could fit 6 - 7 in your five gallon tank with the bio wheel filtration and weekly water changes.

Adding some gravel from an established tank will also speed up the cycle. You can just dump it in if it is the same color or put it in a media bag or stocking if it is different.
