im going somewhere for 5 days, and i know that my fish should be ok with no food, but im wondering if they would be ok with the lights off for 5 days? the plants wouldnt like it either would they? sunlight would come in to a medium degree, but not as they are used to...

opinions?

I have my tank lights on a timer, so they come on at 3 ish every day and go off at 9ish. I say ish because the timer's old and useless and fails spectacularly to put the lights on at the same time each day! But it's better than me trying and forgetting...

as said all my lights on my tanks are on these, very cheap indeed

I think they would be ok without food but a light, depends if you have any live plants

if you do have plants: no

if no plants: yes

Well generally i have read that they should be on atleast 8-10 hours per day. The fish will be definitely fine if you have at least sunlight coming through and, a good thing to do is use a spare tank and put the plants in there with a heater in and put the tank on a window ledge. Or an even easier idea to do is get someone to feed your fish and put the lights on and off, this could be even your next door neighbor.

well, those funny looking plugs wouldnt help anything, but i am going to buy some soon, just all my electrical things are on a powerbar, and those things take up to much space, ill look for one with a small cord on it.

so with live plants it wouldnt work? and i dont exactly have an extra tank laying around. but my sister may be staying home, so she could do it.

im guessing having it on 24 hours wouldnt be good either?

another thing, my kribensis babies... can they survive 5 days without food?

Not the babies necessarily, but I left all my tanks at home for 3 days (I'm on a trip, just in case anybody cares enough to want to know :p ), and I'm just letting natural sunlight do things! ^_^ Of course, I completely forgot about the plants until I was at my destination, 5 hours away.... But I mean seriously, for 3 days they SHOULD be okay. :)

EDIT: If the plants are hardy, then they'll live for 5 days.... My live plants lived during my erratic summer waking/sleeping schedule, after all, so....

Do you have a cover on the back of the tank? If so, remove it, letting more light in. The krib babies should be fine.

fish dont need light only plants, i would say they would all be ok for 5 days, plants might suffer somewhat but would recoved, and the algae would be nuked. Fish can go without food easily for a week dont forget they will nip at the algae and plants, 5 days is nothing, feed them well before you leave and they should all be fine. di

lol, not if you want to be able to see your tank when you come back  it'll be COVERED in algae! You seen Finding Nemo when they break the filter and the whole tank turns green...??!

I left my fish and plants three days without any light over Christmas and they were fine, the plants seem just as healthy. Obviously a timer switch would be best, but if you can't do that you should be okay to just leave them.

If you are UK based Ikea do a pack of 2 timers for £4.99 . They are only just wider than a normal plug so perfect for extension cable/powerbar arrangements.

i have a cover on the back, but the back faces a wall, th side that faces the window hasnt been covered yet. and good to know that the babies will be all good :good:

lol, i have... and thats definetly not what i want, would the tank actually turn green if the filter was turned off?

well, if you left them for 3 days, 2 more days shouldnt hurt.

no, not in the UK, and the timers here in canada are like $15-$20 each... good thing i only have 2 lights lol.
