4Ft Tank, Is This Ballast Ok?

Hi.
 
I had a ballast go on me during xmas.
 
2 x 24w t5.
 
bought one from the internet....can remember the website but i find rs expensive.
 
just make sure it matches your current one spec wise as my first one sent to me had 4 lamp outputs ( mine had 2) so i had to send it back and get the correct one delivered.
 
Make sure you double check the wiring diagram on the ballast also. I had a mate who fitted one and the diagram was slightly different (( bit a head scratching why it was not working))
 
Also shop around a bit. one website was £10 more expensive because of the name but still did exactly what the other one did.

To save you any aggro, could you post a picture of your existing ballast (esp. the schematic, if available).
 
Have a look at the posts in the diy and hardware section for info. on ballasts. Be aware that there are two basic types of electronic ballasts (ignoring dimmable types for now!). The specific ones that you can use depend on how your existing tubes are wired (1 or 2 wires per tube socket).
 
I tend to hang out in the hardware section.. so it might be an idea to post there..
 
Dimmable ballasts are very easy to fit... most types just need an additional momentary push to make switch added to the hood.

I know this is a bit late, but why not retro-fit with a digital ballast? they prolong the life of your tube & cost about £5.

Most definitions of a digital ballast refer to a microcontroller/microprocessor controlled ballast and often mean a dimmable version.
If you are referring to retrofitting an electronic ballast to replace a reactive type  (traditional magnetic ballast) then that is exactly the type discussed above.
 
Most (all?) modern electronic ballasts are essentially a HF SMPS design (high frequency switched mode power supply) coupled with tube operating characteristics monitoring circuitry.

Holy-crud how did i not see your post earlier? Yes, was referring to a microprocessor controlled unit.
