To an extent, yes. But it all does depend on what OP eventually settles on. They asked for options, and that is what I provided.Shrimp restricts the species you can keep
I have kept shrimp with some of my betta fish in the past (and still do). I would say about a third went after the young and 10 percent went after adult cherry shrimp. Oddly enough my pea puffers and dwarf chain loaches ignore adult cherry shrimp. My rasbora, pygmy cories, various minnows, tetra and most other fish that would work in a 10 gallon tend to ignore my shrimp in almost all stages of life.
To be fair, I have not kept gourami with shrimp, as the only species I have are Pearl Gourami (which are big enough I would not keep them with shrimp in the first place).
