40 Gallon Cleaning Crew

What would be a good mix of peacful fish to be a cleaning crew for my 40 gallon tank?

What springs immediately to mind is: 6 to 8 cories in addition to 3 or 4 otos.

But, I live in a world where true Siamese Algae Eaters don't exist.

I like Bol's suggestion of the cories and ottos. If you do decide on cories, then get at least 3 of the same kind, even though cories tend to band together, they do prefer their own kind as company and they seem to be happier that way.

I love my cory cats! I have 6 and a pleco, but am going to be giving the pleco back and possibly getting 3-4 oto cats.
