I am having a stand and tanks made which will be 2m long by 0.4m wide by 0.3m high... The stand will contain 4 tanks with the first one being 1m from ground level.

For the stands, I am using 1" square tubing, but what thickness glass should I use for the tanks??... there would be 3 top supporting strips on each tank as indicated in the diagram below.

The way I worked it out, the uprights would be 1" square tubing and for the crossbars I wanted 1" angle iron....

I went out this morning to the hardware store to purchase the steel and showed the guy the stand diagram below mentioning that each cross section will hold a tank of approximately 240l which is 240 kg's per tier. In his opinion, the stand will not carry the total weight.....

I already have a 3 layer tank stand at home made of 1/4" square tubing all round and it contains 9 standard 3ft tanks with no problems.

What is your opinion??... will the 1" all round steel be ok with 4 x 240l tanks?

cheers for that chart, bookmarked for myself :D

In my opinion, and it is limited in actual experience, the inch tubing for your tanks sounds like it would be plenty for your needs. If you choose to use such a stand, I would want to place a vertical member at both ends of your tank as well as at the ends of the stand. That would mean a trifle more steel bracing than you anticipated but would lend a good deal of stiffness to your final product.

Sorry OM... I do not quite understand.... The end of the stand is the end of the tank... if you know what I mean... every level will contain only one tank reaching the full length & width of the stand, and ther is an upright (vertical) planned in there.

I was thinking that by placing a vertical member at the middle of the span, you would stiffen the stand enough to take the full weight without any problems.
