4 Dkh Solution

I bought some of this solution from Aqua Essentials. I put some solution and reagent in the nice new glass indicator, it was orange from the start and has remained so.

Ive checked the CO2 by doing a kh/ph test and it came back very high, 50.......still the indicator showed orange so I test the solution with a kh test and with the first drop of kh test it should turn blue then turn to its end point of yellow however with the first drop it turned yellow..........indicating a dkh of 1.

I went back to the website and this info is on there (dont recall it being there when I purchased)


"Add 5 mls of KH reference solution to drop checker, then add 3 drops of pH indicator solution from your PH test kit (not supplied). The pH indicator solution from your test kit must be bromo blue - other colours do not work for this solution."

Now my reagents are the orange coloured ones which I assume is not 'bromo blue', however they dont sell bromo blue reagent.

so two questions..............the articles Ive read on here with peoples DIY solution doesnt say particular reagents dont work so what is it about this one ? and where can I get bromo blue reagent from ?

as is the hagen low range ph test kit...

Glad youve got it sorted. Just a quick question when we are on the subject. Im looking at drop checkers and a lot of them come with reagent but say nothing about the 4dkh solution. Does the reagent supplied work as a permanent CO2 indicator on its own or is this a once off reading that tells you the CO2 levels at the time the tank water is added?

On Ae people are saying the API kit doesn't work but thats the one I used and mine went blue and now is a lovely mid to light green so I am happy that the API kit does work.

The 4dKH you either make yourself if you have the means, or you buy it from AE. I change the indicator in my dropper once every two or three weeks.

Cheers dave, I knew about that. Just wondering why there is no mention of the 4dkh solution on the drop checkers pages on AE, just says to use tank water. Surely by adding tank water you aren't going to get an accurate reading at all?

Is yours a DIY solution or the 4dkh solution Richard sells on Ae? what colour is the API reagent you are using from the bottle?
