i have a 3ft 30g tank and i want to put predatory fish in it. what can i keep? what combinations of fish and how many? i have some background around predatory fish, i keep largemouth bass in a pond, and 60g oscar tank.

How about something like a pair of South American Leaf Fish Monocyrhus Polyacanthus
Or a Ctenopoma acutirostre
Or a Polypterus senegalus

If they are legal in your area, then try the rainbow/red wolffish (Erythrinus erythrinus). They are one of my favorite micropredators, but they are unfortunately illegal in my state. :(

Some Thalassophryne amazonica (prehistoric monster fish) would work. A sanchezi or irritans piranha, Chaca chaca, or if you want to go brackish or marine, frogfish would work too. There are endless possibilities though, so find something you like then ask us if it is suitable for your tank.

Yes! Try these guys! I had one, he got around 8-9" but then died this summer :'( . Probably way up there on my favorite fish that I've ever kept. Right now I have two other species of wolf fish.

Here's some pictures to influence your decision...

i do recall wolves getting kinda big. i havent seen smaller species though but the ones i saw would never fit in a 30g. lol.

I wouldn't put a Senegal in a 30 gall for life. I tried it and imo it is too small for something as active as a Senegal.

The rainbow wolf (Erythrinus erythrinus) is a smaller species of wolf, only obtaining close to 8". :)

Really?

How big was your bichir? Mine's about 8", but she's in a 3 1/2' 30 gallon, and she's fine, but I will be moving her and the other inhabitants of the 30 into a brand new 55, so if she does get cramped, she'll get a new tank.

I am going to answer for DE and say that my senny is way too active to put into a 30gl. She hit 8 inches within a few months, so I am pretty sure that a large tank (125gl) like mine is really the best for one (or a group). I really agree that a 55gl should be the bare minimum for one. :good:

Of course a 55g+ is going to be better, bigger is almost always better, however I think that 30g fine as a minimum.

A senegal will rarely reach 10", 8" is a more realistic maximum. Most 30gs are 12" wide, so that means that a senegal will only reach 2/3rds of the width of the tank. That is sufficient, especially seeing as a senegal hardly has flexibilty issues when turning corners.

My senegal is reaching 7" now in my 30g and I see no problems whilst it is at this size, it still has plenty of cruising space. However I think leaving the tank quite bare and open with a lot of swimming space is important if you are choosing to keep a senegal in a 30g.
