hi all,

really want a 3d background for my rio 125, seen in ebay and they are quite cheap about £15 for a piece 60cm x 40cm. However my tank is 80cm x 50cm, so would it be better to buy 2 of these or would it still look ok with part of the tank with out the 3d background? for example if i planted that area heavily.

Also how do you go about attaching the background. I read somewhere you need special silicon sealant? is this correct? or can any bathroom sealant be used?

any advice on this would be great!

You need to use Aquarium or Food Grade silicone to stick them on with. A decent blob in each corner would be plenty. However, the tank would need to be empty for at least 48 hours after application to allow the silicone to cure and the vinegar smell to disappear.

The Juwel backgrounds, although more pricey, interlock together and can also be trimmed to fit. They don't have a very large range of backgrounds, but you may find something you can get sent from USA a bit cheaper.

ok i see, so you cant put the background in whilst the tank has water in?

You cannot fix a background when there is water in teh tank, because the water will lift it out of place.
Also, it needs to be siliconed in place, so that fish cannot squeeze behind.

I now have one of these foam ones, made specifically to fit Jewel Aquariums:

They look really naff with all the bright colours, but pick off the plastic plants, and let a bit of algae develop and they look great.

See the link in my siggy for how mine now looks:
