I got my first snail, Mac, last Sunday. He died today. It took me a week to kill him. He was never active, I don't know what I did wrong. I'm afraid my other two are going to die.

26 US gallons, been running for 10 weeks. Ammonia--0ppm, Nitrite--0ppm, Nitrate--10ppm, pH--6.8 or 7.0, it's hard to tell. Temperature--78F. Water is conditioned with Prime. No medications in the tank.

My first snail was never active and died in a week too. The others have all been fine. Maybe you were just unlucky and had a bad snail

I'm sorry you lost your snail, too. I hope it was just luck and that my others will be fine.

Yeah he never really moved much and within a week was dead with his trap door off. I got another and he whizzes around the tank and is fine.

I'm in the US, sadly, but your offer is very kind and I really appreciate it. Just to sate my curiosity, I went by the shop where I purchased Mac and, well, every snail in that tank had died. Some were floating at the top, hung out of their shells. I won't say I'm blameless, as I'm sure there's something I could have done differently, but it would seem he didn't have a good start. I've got the two I ordered from AquaBid...let's hope I do better with this lot.

Aww sorry, sounds like he didt have chance if the stores are all dead, he was prob weak to start with and the move finished him off :( They may have medicated the tank for something not knowing copper will kill them maybe

what are you feeding the snails and how hard is your water in your area? and what is the pH? perhaps they arent getting enough minerals (ie calcium) and their shells are thinning and they becomes sick and die. Acidic water also leeches minerals from their shells. make sure they are getting enough food too.
you can pop in a few tums (calcium antiacids) once a week. the snails will happily munch on them and will solve the problem if its down to soft water/acidic water.
cheers

Really, Tums, does that work?! Only I've just got some apple snails; they're currently in a little tank on their own so I can adjust the water as my tapwater is really, really soft but I'd love to be able to put them in the bigger tanks.

would Tums help the ramshorn snails in my 55g that have developed white stripes? Would the Tums hurt the fish?

pH is 6.8 or 7.0...I'm a bit colorblind and that API test is hard to read. I've been adding a bit of Kent's liquid calcium daily to help with shell development. I fed algae wafers and cucumbers, both were ignored. I'd gladly try Tums, so long as they're safe for fish. Thank you for your advice.

ive not had any problem with using tums and effecting fish. just dont add too many at once or the water may go cloudy, but not harmful.
if you have soft water you need to supplement calcium. the liquids might not be enough as ingestion for the snails is best for a healthy shell.
cheers

*edit to add
tums will work fine for any snail that needs some supplements for minerals. some folks suggest cuttlebones, but my snails never seemed to take to them. tums work best in my experience and the snails like them (weird huh).
