I'm not sure why but every time I try to add new otos to my tank they die. When I first bought my original otos I had three. I had them for about 2 1/2 years when one of them died. I recently bought 4 and within 2 weeks all four of the new ones had died. The other two original ones are still doing fine. Is it murder? What am I doing wrong with these new guys?

My water is in good shape. PH 6.8, Ammonia 0, Nitrates 5. Is there something else I should be doing or are there some special conditions these fish need?

It's the same tank. I suppose it's possible there wasn't enough algae. I had a breakout of blue green algae and I've been taking some measures to eliminate it and that has resulted in less algae overall. Still, I supplement with algae wafers, but maybe that wasn't enough or they just didn't like it.

I find that if you buy 6 Otos and 3 die that there is no point buying any more (from experience) as the new ones will bring you to 6 and 3 will die.

Its nearly always that there is not enough food to go around or that the owner is relying on algae to feed them and not supplementing their diet.

Put some simple catfish algae pellets in and some vegetation just before you go to bed and they will eat it.

Other than that spot dosing BBA will result in it dieing off and the Otos will eat it at this stage adding to your food count. lol

When i got my 1st 5, 3 of them died within a few days.

So I went and got anther 5, but this time i put algae wafers, cucumber and lettuce in the tank as soon as i put them in, and they ate, and ate, and ate. Only one died, and the others were twice as fat within 3 days. :good:

Had them a good 6 months, now.
