hello

my 3 gallon tank has been cycled and ready to be used. i was wondering what sort of fish should i buy. i would want to avoid the betta because the are territorial fishes. i currently have 2 red and blue colombian tetra in it. i was thinking of adding afew more fishes. what are the more hardy community fishes that i should get? i was actually thinking of a zebra danio, 3 hocky stick tetra, and a algae eater. any commnets? am i overcrowding it alittle?

well first off Zebra Danios Are shoalers, Second they are so fast that a three gallon would not accomidate there fast movments.

I'd just get Maybe some neons and nothing else just my opinion

Cardinal Tetras are great for that tank! I don't see why not. :fun:

what is the difference between a cardinal tetra and the neon tetra? they all looked the same! i have read from somewhere that neon tetras are actually difficult fishes to keep because they are sensitive to water conditions and are prone to some dieseases. does the cardinal tetra have the same problem?

i would love to have these beautiful fishes but because i am a newbie in fish keeping, thats why i am staying away from them at the moment.

neons' red stops halfway, cardinals' red is full length. neons generally cheaper than cardinals (sometimes by quite abit) both are fragile fish... you'd better make sure your tank is cycled or you may lose quite a handful of them

oh yes, so i am going to stay away from them first until i can get m hands on a bigger tank. so any other small shoaling fishes that i can get for my 3 gallon tank? wat are the choices that i have?

u cant get a big shoal in a 3 gal. i heard white cloud mountain minnows and nice n hardy (i've seen the words cloud n mountain in their names and not too sure about their exact name  )

ok, thanks for the infor! :D
i always have headache over what fish to get. sometimes, i leave my LFS without even buying anything coz i can't make up my mind...

Hi eugene :)

It's really hard to stock a small tank like yours without running into some kind of problem. It's always best to have too few fish than to have too many, though, so you did the right thing by not just buying what looked good in the store.

I think, with what you already have in there, a pair, or 2 females and one male guppy might be the very most that would fit. Even with that, you are pushing it a little and will have to take great care to keep it clean.

Another possibility, is to get an African Dwarf Frog. (Instead of the guppies) They are fun and live entirely underwater.

3 gallons with a decent filter system will work for about 6 neons...they are not as fragile as they look. Cardinals are a bit more sensistive to PH levels. There are also other tetras that would work fine such as lemon tetras, black neons, etc. Just look up tetra in google and you should get plenty of reading material.

what about pencil fish? are they hardy fishes as well, like the white cloud minows? should i get the minows or the pencils?
