Hey guys quick question I have a two gallon tank with one betta fish that runs a small aqueon filter in it. How often should i replace the filter with one fish in it

change the media at least every 4-5 months, you can wash it every 2 weeks but it make sure the water you use has been dechlorinated

Ok yeah I thought you wouldnt have to change those too often lol thanks!

Why would you want to change the media every 4-5 months, Derp?!

We usually say that you never change media, unless it is physically breaking apart. I have media that's been in continuous use for well over 15 years!

Changing media just gives the manufacturers more money and risks your fish by getting rid of your good bacteria. It doesn't matter the size of tank, amount of fish or sort of filter; keep the media! If it ever does start to disintegrate, change no more than a quarter at one time, and leave at least six weeks between replacements.

Wow really so i can keep the filter in there for that long!? Sweet! Even if the filter is the cartridge kind?

I've only ever replaced one small bit of media from my filter and it was when it suddenly started breaking apart while I was rinsing it.

If you find that your filter isn't pulling through the water it used to, pull out your cartridge and see if the brown gunk has built up, if so, take a bowl of old tank water (not tap water) and rinse it gently to clear the gunk then replace it into the filter.

The only possible exception would be activated carbon/charcoal and floss (the cotton wool type stuff).

That works be chemically binding substances to its surface, so does become 'full' eventually. Although it makes a fairly good home for bacteria, if you have carbon in your filter cartridges, I would recommend you change it; either for sponge or some ceramic rings or something like that.

Floss can also be replaced. It makes a very poor biological medium, so won't have many bacteria.

The filters i have do have the activated carbon in them already on both of my tanks do they make filter cartridges that have zero carbon. I might just get rid of my filter and settle for an aqua clear so i have more choices and media. Cause replacing these cartridges can add up,
