290 Litre Goldie Tank

I picked up the new tank on Wednesday! Found an absolute gem on Freecycle - 290 litres, fully planted, CO2 system, external filter, heater, eco complete substrate and probably £150+ of accessories. I'm am genuinely terrified of the CO2 system as it doesn't have any instructions and I don't like pressurised gases at the best of times! Maybe I'll get the confidence to set it up but until them I'm dosing with liquid carbon and liquid ferts.

So, here it is!

The mess in my kitchen - this is only half the stuff that came with the tank!

The plants I am keeping in the tank (the rest are in a bucket outside until I need them for other tanks).

Stock when I got it:

2 x Puntius pentazona (which I mistook for Puntius tetrazona)
1 x Epalzeorhynchos frenatum
5 x Gyrinocheilus aymonieri (4 golden and 1 standard colouration)
6 x Otocinclus macrospilus (I think . . .)
2 x Corydoras sterbai
1 x Corydoras aeneus
3 x Neritina natalensis
1 x Ancistrus pirareta (I think . . .)

The corys are all in my 65 litre community now, with my old C.aeneus. I've put the nerites and otos in there as well. Lets just say that tank is well stocked now!

The shark, bristlenose and two of the CAEs are still in the 290 litre as that is the only tank I have currently set up that is comfortably big enough for them. The other CAEs are spread around my other tanks at the moment but I'm looking for a home for most/all of them as they are not suitable for my smaller tanks or the stock I want in the larger tank. Stupid slime sucking bullies. Pity, I think they're gorgeous fish and would love to keep them.

The barbs are in my 2 foot tank with the kribs atm. I thought they were tigers - it was hard to get a good look as they were hiding away and very pale. I got 3 tiger barbs today, put them in the tank and then counted the stripes. Ah well, they're shoaling together and the 5 banded barbs have cheered up no end. Must have done something right! I think I'll end up with two seperate shoals eventually but I'll let them settle and I'll get my 3 footer up before I add anymore.

Goldies have been moved into the 290 now. Not idea as there are still some trops in there but with only 6 fish in the tank, none of which is over 3", I'm sure the filter will cope. Water temperature is an issue but the tank is quit happily sitting a 25-27C without needing the heater to come on. Their old coldwater tank was at 27 as well so I can't really get it cooler if I try! Everyone seems happy and the goldies love the space. The shark, bristlenose and CAEs spend their time hiding under the bogwood anyway so no-one is getting bothered.

Stock now:

2 x fancy goldfish (Carassius auratus)
1 x Epalzeorhynchos frenatum
2 x Gyrinocheilus aymonieri
1 x Ancistrus pirareta

Stock:

3 x Betta splendens (female)
6 x Otocinclus macrospilus
2 x Corydoras sterbai (I need at least one more)
3 x Corydoras aeneus
3 x Neritina natalensis
1 x Palaemonentes paludosus (I think)

35 Litre Arc

I scaped this yesterday with some bits and bobs I had lying around. It's got eco complete as the main substrate with some pale gravel at the front. Cabomba at the back and some crypts to the side. Nothing special but it is the first tank I have ever actually scaped so yay for me. Sorry about the rubbish photos, using a mobile phome camera in a very bright room doesn't work so well!

Stock:

6 x Paracheirodon innesi
4 x Betta splendens (juvenile females, rescue job)
2 x Laetacara curviceps (juvenile)
1 x Aplocheilus dayi (juvenile)

All of these are temporary residents. When they're more mature they'll need to be rehomed into my larger tanks.

The goldfish tank is excellent ;) You got that for free!?

Yep. £1500 worth of tank, plants, supplements, food, substrate, cabinet and equipment for free. The only cost was the time it took to strip it down and set it back up. I told the guy I got it from that he was mad but he said he just wanted it to go to someone who would look after it.

what light do you have on the 260?

i would recommend setting up the c02.

looks good BTW :good:

For free, that gives complete and utter new meaning to the word bargain. That has got to be one of the luckiest finds ever.

Thanks for the compliments!

Anyone have any suggestions for a nice background? I am not going to paint it or anything like that. I'd quite like a planted background but I can't get anything local that is tall enough.

Going to use bin bags for now!

Not too sure. I think they are 40" tubes. There are two of them. I know it is enough for the plants as they grew like MAD in the year the other guy had the tank. I'll check them out and let you know what the W is.

I'll post a photo of the CO2 system and see if I can get some help. I think the canister needs changing but I am so scared of the thing flying off on me. I fear pain, lol.

yeah, post another thread in the planted and i'm sure we'll suss it out for ya.

Literally just come back from putting a bin-liner background on the tank and it makes such a difference! Photos once I have done some work.

thats amazing were about do you live?

York :good:

Will do B-)

Due to the general stress of trying to plant the tank (I am too short to reach the bottom, even standing on a chair) I'm going to let it become quite wild and just trim as needed. No aquascaping for this one, which is a bit of a shame.
