Hi all,

I am restarting my 29 gallon tank (see picture) and am currently planning on building a tank around apistogrammas.

I am planning on getting a pair of apistogrammas to take over the bottom part of the tank. I ideally would also like to have a school of some sort of fish but I also like the look of killifish like either the golden wonder or clown killis. I have also thought of getting some bottom feeders but don’t know how the apistos would do with them in such a small space.

Basically, what are some good options for a schooling fish and how many should I keep? Can I keep a few killifish for the top layer too or would that be potential for some aggression? Are there any good bottom feeders that would do well with the apistos?

Thanks!

Hi and welcome to the forum :)

If you want the Apistogramma cichlids to breed, then just have 1pr in the tank and nothing else.

Clown killis are too small to be kept with most Apistogramma species.
Golden wonder killis are too big and aggressive to go with small peaceful cichlids.

In a small tank you should not have catfish and cichlids because the cichlids will take over the bottom of the aquarium and harass or kill any intruders, and all bottom dwelling fishes will be considered intruders when the cichlids breed.

You need a picture on the back of the tank to make any fish feel more comfortable. Some floating plants will also help.

You could get a group of small tetras. Something like black phantom tetras, flame tetras, glolight tetras. Get a group of 10 tetras.
