Hello there I'm new to this forum and just wondered if I could get some advise iv got a 200 litre aqurium , at the moment I have 8 danios " zebra and leopard mix " , 8 tiger barbs , 1 red-tailed shark and 2 plecos ! I added the red-tail today and seems to be settleing in well ! The tiger barbs niped his tail abit at first but this seems to have stopped since his chased a couple back ! And and seems to have claimed the tree roots in there as his territory , just wondered what else would be good to add as tank mates or have I reached the limit for a 200 litre ?

welcome to the forum :good:

i hate to put a downer on a new fish but red tailed sharks need 300L (give or take) what are the dimensions of the tank?

sorry i dont know much about the other fish...

but if your looking for more stocking.. ask yourself can the filter cope with the bioload?. will the fish fight?. is the tank big enough for the fish?. will they be fighting over space. e.g you wouldn't want to get more bottom dwellers if you already have 2 plecs. is there hiding places for the fish?
do they need to be in more than 1? to feel comfortably

(i typed all this out before but it dident send...)

Its 39'' long 17'' width and 18'' deep ! I have a 4 box filteration system using activated carbon , ceramic bio rings and bio balls ! The fish I have at the moment all seem to get on fine and the only fish I think I have that will grow bigger are the plecos and the red-tail ? Not sure exactly what kind of plecos I have there brown if that helps I know they will grow quite big as iv kept them in the past ! It's well planted and also with hollow logs and tree roots for hiding and still plenty of open water Wich is the length of the tank

Ditch the carbon, you dont need it unless you need to remove meds. Replace it with more lovely media.

Hi nick. Iv had a simmiler set up in the past in roughly the same size tank. I kept clown loach, corys, bleeding hearts and gourami's with tiger and oddessa barb's, danio's and red-tail shark, and they all seemed to get along fine. Although when the gourami got a bit bigger, some of the smaller danio's started to dissapear haha.

Ok thanks I did want to get a clown loach but was told that they really need to be with atleast one other and that they will get big so a 200 litre wouldnt really be big enough

Was told that a red-tailed shark wouldn't want anything less than a 200 litre but it would still do ok in it ! What sort of media would I change for the carbon if I don't need it ?

i think you could probably get away with it in a 200L if it has a lot of hiding places and a big footprint

Just put a foam pad in instead of the carbon, or anything inert that will pass water and have lots of holes to allow bacteria to make a home. When I removed my carbon from my new tank, I used a coarse filter pad from a Juwel filter in my small tank to replace it. It also had bacteria already in it so that helped as well.

I have 4 cotton pads in each 4 of the filter boxes already so should I just take the carbon out ? And how often do I have to clean the pads as they are starting to look dirty and should I just do two at a time in some tank water rather than all 4 at the same time so I don't wash away all the bacteria ?

Or i think I have floss pads they came with the whole filtration system

Dirty isn't bad, blocked is bad. If you think they are not passing the water through very well then a gentle squeeze in old aquarium water when you do a water change will be fine, that way your bacteria will be unharmed and no problems should be seen. I don't see a problem with doing all four at the same time but I would only two just in case. If you replace the media then I personally would only change one at a time although some formulae say you can do half the media then the other half so long as you leave a considerable time (some say three months) between the two changes.

I would have thought that cotton pads would not allow a very good passage of water even when only slightly contaminated but not having seen them they may be more porous than I imagine. I prefer coarse foam but then each to his or her own.

they need to be kept in groups of at least 6, and do get monstrous in size, so your tank is indeed too small.

Yeah that's why I have taken the clown loach off my list of fish ! Thank you

Hi ive had my tank for about 2 mounths now and it is about 250l .i have 2 clown loaches,3 striped corydoras ,6 rummy noses,7 black neons , 2 honey gournamis,2 rams , 1 bristle nose pleco and 1 siemese flying fox.

my SFF looks a bit lonely and i was wondering if i should get another and my corydoras look a bit shy and i am planning to get another two.my clown loaches are only about 2cm long at the moment as i got them of my cosions breeding pair as fry and are growing quite fast.

Thanks this is my first post and please give me any advice you have as i am still a beginer thx again guys. xxxxx :good:

please post your theries do you think my SFF needs a freind as he /she does not come out from behind the filter that often and i think another one will make him/her more brave. thx
