20 gallon high AKA 20 gallon = 24"x12"x16"
20 gallon long = 30"x12"x12"

It can also depend on the make of tank. i.e some may be slightly deeper but not as long etc.

This shouldn't be a problem unless your wanting to fit the tank into a tight space or set it on a specific stand.
