I am planning on upgrading from my Hagen 200 (hang on back filter) to a canister filter to handle my increasing biological load in my 29 U.S. gallon freshwater. Just wondering what the best middle-cost filter is. Also, I am curious if there is such thing as a screw in flourescent bulb that would ft in a 2.5 gallon hood. I have looked, but the smallest I have found is a coiled one that goes in a lamp that would be an inch too wide.
Thanks,
J.R.

I too have a 29g and am thinking of changing to a canister filter to lower the noise level. I am currently running a penguin 125 (way too noisy) and a rugf. From my research, most people consider the ehiems the quietest, but very spendy. I am seriously consdering the Rena Filstar X2. Good reviews, and less than $100 U.S. online.

Eheims are certainly as good as it gets for canisters. They are as silent and reliable as they come. Check out the Classic 2211, it's not too expensive.

The Fluval 104 and Rena XP1 will also both get the job done. They are not bad by any means, but are not quite eheims.

A friend of mine purchased a Magnum 350 Deluxe and is very happy with it on his 40 long tank. I have always liked Fluvals myself, but the LFS has almost got me talked into a Eheim.
