well the title says it all really
but any way
can i have a 2 parrot fish & a comon plec for a bit together will they be ok & Happy toghter or not
ina 50 gallon UK

I would only go with one parrot as they do get to about 10 inches and are a bit aggresive, but it will leave you with some limited options as tank mates

please reffer to your other thread about common plecs please :)

dude thats fine, i got a pair of blood parrots, they are meant to get 10 " or so but theyve grown like an inch in 3 months, i wdnt worry about it for a while, they are very sociable fish.

i agree its fine
they are really slow growers compared to other cichlids
ive never seen a 10" parrot
most get about 6"
it also depends on the blood line, its hard to predict the size a hybrid will get

i disagree with them being aggressive. they are pretty passive, they may try sometimes to act
tough, but with that deformed mouth and stubby body they cant do any damage.
ive kept them in a community aquarium with tetras, gourami's etc. and they never showed any aggression.
they only show aggression to other cichlids
a pleco will not be harmed

A pair in a 50 is fine for a long time regardless, but any Parrot will get to at least 8" and up to 12" if they're given a chance to live long enough and a tank big enough.

i cant find anywhere it says a parrot gets bigger than 8"
id love to see a 12" parrot, it must be a sight if indeed it does exist

unless of course the poster is talking about the true parrot cichlid and not the man made blood parrot.
the true parrot cichlid hoplarchus psittacus, if thats the case then no they wont be happy in a 50 gallon for long since they exceed 12"

There is a variety of blood parrots that get big, but they are known as "King Kong" parrots. I have only seen them once at a LFS and they sure wanted some good money for them! But I agree that the more common BP's will get about 6" or so. My own female BP is 6" and I've had her for a little over 5 years now. I honestly don't think she's going to get any bigger either!

My BP is an aggressive fish all the time and has even drawn blood from my hand when she had eggs in there! But then, her mouth isn't deformed very much at all which is why she can bite so hard! Of course that doesn't explain her temperment! ;)

oh wow she laid eggs! awww
did the young survive? fry parrots must be soo cute :)
ive seen the king kongs i had to laugh when i saw them. they were about 8", just looked like a full grown parrot...but if they were babies then whoa lol
the mouths on mine cant even close. i give them soft foods and tiny pellets seperately

A note on parrot aggression -- being that they are hybrids, their temperaments are completely unpredictable. Some take after one parent and some take after the other, I guess :p. The point is, you can't make a blanket statement like "parrots are aggressive" or "parrots aren't aggressive", because there's simply no way of knowing how your individual fish will be and it can easily go either way.
I have a BP x midas hybrid who is sweet as a kitten with my oscar, but I had to return her sibling to my LFS long ago when they were only 3" because he was an absolute terror and wanted to kill everything in sight.

I'm keeping 2 parrots and 2 other fish in a 55 temporarily. We move up to a 125 sometime this year.
Mine are quite peaceful.

I think it should be ok for now. :)

Since she's the only cichlid in the tank there aren't any fry. Just eggs that get eaten when she finally gives up on them! I hesitate to get her a mate since she is an aggressive fish and might beat up the male, or with my luck I would end up with a fish even more aggressive then her who might beat up on her instead! Not gonna happen!

Well, considering fish don't actually stop growing till they die and 5 years isn't old for these guys... anyway, people have a hard time believing the potential of a great many species of fish because they don't have a chance to experience it and never see it because most people kill or get rid of fish long before they reach that potential. Any of the standard BP hybrid species can reach 8".

I was at a LFS yesterday and they had King Kong parrots in there! Weird because we were just talking about them.....anyway, one of them was huge, huge, huge!! At least 12" in length and mean as a pit bull with rabies, it was trying to get into the compartment next to it.....they had the smaller ones next to it, they were about 5" in length, awesome fish but they wanted $50 (US) for the big one and $30 for the smaller ones!!

So now I've seen 6 of the KK variety.... :)

Just out of curiosity, regular BP's run around $8 (US) here, about how much do you guys and gals pay for them where you are?

$30 aint much if it's actually a real kk parrot..

I pay anywhere from $5 for 1'' ones, to $25 for 2'' ones... depends where I go and what type of parrots they are.
