Ok so i have 2 new tanks that have been cycled etc. all i need now is to think about what fish to stock in them: My first tank is 24x12x12 and my second is 36x12x18.

I was wondering if anyone could help me out on what fish to have in them, I would like to have one of these tanks as a community tank and the other as a species tank maybe some type of cichlid. I would also like to have them both well planted.

I was also wondering if a fluval 2 plus will be ok with a well planted tank as it is quite a powerful filter and i dont want my plants to be damaged. also what light should i use to promote plant growth.

I know this is a lot of questions but if anyone can help me then thanks loads :D

The smaller tank would have to be the community as it not big enough to even house rams who are one of the smaller species of cichlids. You could go for a shoal of cories, The maybe some tetras and a dwarf gorumai?
The larger tank is the same size as my newly aquired one so ti should be 22g which is just big enough for a pair or rams. :)

I'll disagree and venture that a well planted 24x12x12 would be fine for a pair of rams as a species tank. No other cichlid though.

If you don't want rams, go with the smaller community (livebearers, rasbora, otos, corys, etc.) and use the larger one to house an appropriate pair/trio of small/medium central/south american cichlids along with a school of ditherfish and a small pleco.

That's my $0.02 at least...

If i was to go with rams in my tank, do you think i would be able to breed them and is there anyway i could have malawi in my larger tank?

thx

If you get a compatible pair and treat them right (good water maintenance, quality food, spawning caves), rams would almost certainly spawn in a planted tank.

You could definitely keep malawi mbuna in your larger tank, but should be very deliberate about your stocking decisions. Since that's toward the small end for keeping them, you should limit yourself to the few species that would do well in a tank that size. The key is lots of rock work and/or other cave structures, as this is their natural environment.

Some mbuna that would work in your tank:
Labidochromis caeruleus (yellow lab)
Pseudotropheus saulosi
Iodotropheus sprengerae (rusty cichlid)
Pseudotropheus acei

I would select 2 species and get 4 of each. In the case of the saulosi, 1M:3F would be best.

Hope that helps!
