2 HOT Magnums w/Bio Wheels or 2 Emperor 400's

I will be getting a 55 Gallon tank to replace my current 30g loaded with guppies.

The tank will most likely be overstocked with guppies and their babies.

The HOT Magnums will run me about $130 for both, the 400's about $100.

The $30 price difference is not a factor. The magnums are rated at 250g per hour, the 400 at 400gph. Each HOT Magnum comes with the Bio-wheels as well.

I just want the cleanest tank possible.

Hey raynist, I don't have any experience with the Magnums but I run two Emperor 400's on my 75 gallon tank and they work great. If you get them don't believe Marineland about changing the cartridges every month. You can just keep rinsing them out in old tank water and they'll last a long, long time. If you're worried about the carbon you can cut that out. My tank is spotless with those two filters running. To be honest, with a 55 you only really need one but as long as the current isn't to high for the fish or any plants you might have having a backup filter is great. Your link to Petsmart didn't work so I don't know how much they cost but I belive Big Al's Online has them for $2-3 cheaper.
