I saw a large jar at the grocery store the other day, and impulse bought it. It is roughly 2.5 gallons, and I am going to do a super low tech scud aquarium in it. No heater, no filter. Pictures to follow!

The first pic. Empty jar, small table, put up a background sheet.

I went with a simple black aquarium sand, an agate (I think?) that my mom gave me along with a piece of seiryu stone. Some anubias, anacharis, horn wort.

Added some giant duckweed, water spangles (?), and frogbit. Along with one of my mossballs.

the giant duckweed looks cute, about how wide is the biggest piece? i have small duckweed that somehow mutated a big variety that sheds its roots so frequently and clogs the filter
it is looking very well!!!
might i suggest add some moss or marimo algae moss ball(it helps with everything, and really adds to the look!)
and i assume you are doing shrimp stuff and they like moss and algae)

The giant duckweed gets about as big as my pinky nail. I like it a LOT more than regular duckweed, which I have made an effort to keep out of the jar.

As far as true moss goes, I don't plan on adding any. The scuds will eat any delicate plants, and I expect the hornwort and anacharis to be demolished. I do have one marimo moss ball in there.

Its looking great! Nice job!

Oooooh, I love projects like this. Well-done! Have you thought about adding seed shrimp, copepods, black worms, and other interesting inverts?

I suspect your hornwort, at least, will be OK. Not many critters are tough enough to eat hornwort.

If I can find them locally, yes. I got the scuds from my lfs, they always keep some on hand and one of the employees also has a culture.

They are amphipods that eat detritus and scavenge. They make a good clean up crew alternative, and will breed so long as there is plenty of food for them. I plan on feeding them to my fish once the culture starts producing.

good job on this little setup, I like it
