was at my lfs and the lady who helped me told me that she has a 10gal salt water tank with 2 clown fish, gobies. i thought clowns need at least 20gals?

I know in "a book" it has said 2 are fine in 45l. Apparently they never stray more than 20cm away from thier host. But as alwas, the bigger the better.

And also, its a matter of opinion and choice, many members on here have varied opinions on what the minimum capacity a clown fish should be in. Some say 50l for a pair whereas some say 100l.

how many liters is 10gals and how about 20gals?

10gals is 37ltrs
30gals is 113.562ltrs
so 10gal is not big enough.

IMO she is wrong

I feel rather strongly on this matter - as many people know its imo that a pair of clowns should not go in anything less than 25 gallons (which I know many will not agree with).

Having kept a pair in a tank of 26 gallons and then moved them (before adult) to a five footer it was with joy I watched them swim around the tank, they looked like kids let out to play for the first time - yes I know I am putting human emotions on to a fish, but i am human :p

As betta mentioned there is a famous quote that clowns don't move further than 20 cm from their host and this seems to be proving true the older mine get, but, they still do the odd foray around the tank and twice a day move to the other end for feeding.

So, I will stick with the 25 gallons

I don't much like clowns in a 10G either... I think a 20G should be considered minimum. While it's totally possible to do and be successful, it doesn't mean it's the best thing. Sometimes it's just a matter of opinion

in one of my books i have it said that clown fish can be kept in a 60L tank. but i think they shold be kept in 90L tank or more.

Shes also wrong imo aswel.

My Clowns are pretty big now...and they dont just stay within 20CM of their host. They are having a swim 3 foot away from it as i type this. IMO, the only thing that should be kept in 10 gallons are tiny gobies. Not two clowns and a goby.

well, how about 1 clownfish 1 royal dotty back in a 10gal ;)
