I know it will be a challenge. My plan is to get the water setup first. I'll then add the live sand for a couple weeks (I can probably do shorter but no hurry since I have other tanks to play with ;) ). After the sand has been in a while, I'll add live rock and let that sit for probably another 2-3 weeks. My biggest question is what kind of light setup can I get that would fit a standard 10g. I will probably only be doing a couple shrimp or crabs and fish will not be added until a couple months down the road (if at all).

Any help on the lights would be greatly appreciated.

Will you be keeping corals? If so, head over to hellolights.com and check out the 96w Powerquad. It runs about $100 but its a great light. Get the legs too, keeps the light off the surface of the water!!

If this will be FOWLR then any light will do.

Add the sand and rock together. No reason to separate.

Oh, and don't buy any expensive livestock or sensitive livestock, as a tank that tiny IS going to crash, and crash fairly regularly.

Eh? I have seen 10 gal tanks up for 3-4 years with no crashes. How do you come to this conclusion?

A 10G reef? By a newbie? Not crash for years? I tend to be skeptical.

It will probably only be FOWLR, with any life on the rock being the extent of any reef-type inverterbrates. I honestly don't know if I'll have any actual fish, just some shrimp and crabs.

that would be cool, i think you should get one fish though, maybe a firefish goby, or purple firefish goby. they are small, hardy and need looking... :)
