I bought a second hand 10g uk tank on saturday to divide for 3 bettas. The trouble is, the glass 'shelf' that runs along the front, and again at the back is in the way of me doing a good job. What I want to know is, is this glass bracing the tank, or is it simply a support for cover glass? There is no brace running front to back, but I am assuming the two seperate pieces of glass are still providing some support. Can I remove them? Or will the whole thing collapse? lol.

Thanks

Oh, it is 24" long. And the glass is around 4-5mm thick... if that makes a difference.

anyone?

If the tank is braced, it's because it's required for strength purposes and not just to support cover- glasses. To remove it completely with that thickness glass could weaken the tank considerably.

Thanks, I'm going to remove it, put the dividers in, then replace it.

Thanks for the advice!

Hmm... I'd like to know how 2 glass strips, one on the front and one on the back would help strengthen it. Its not like its going across the length of the tank. it's just there. I always use them to rest the hood on. :S

It's quite simple really. They are known as bracing bars, and allow the manufacturer to use thinner glass than he would need to if they were not there, thus keeping the cost of the tank down. You are not alone in using them to rest your hood or coverglasses on, but that is not the prime purpose of them.
