Hi. I am planning to buy a 100 gallon tank for my living room. It's above the garage so I wonder if the the floor is strong enough for the weight (since it's not concrete)? Have people put a 100+ gallon tank on a 2nd floor?

Also will it damage my hardwood floor???

As long as the floor has been built to code you wont have any problem. The tank will weigh between 800 and 1000 pounds and modern code will support that no problem. As for the floor, i have several tanks on hardwood floors with no problem. Just make sure you have towels close by and wipe up any water quickly and you should have no problems. HTH :)

It that weight should be no problem. My 75gallon Tank is on hardwood floors, which is elevated from rest of the room and its 2nd placement. When moved there was no damage, but who knows about long term, but major concern will be with the spilling of water on that area!

It shouldn't cause a problem coz the weight is distributed over the floor area that the tank covers. Just imagine 8-9 people standing in the same area. If the floor can hold them, then the floor can hold a tank.

I was thinking of adding a large tank in my kitchen. The house was built in the 70's with hardwood floors. I was also thinking of adding bracing that reaches the floor to the basement to help support the weight. Has anyone ever heard of this or done this?

Bracing couldnt hurt. essentially you would be looking at buying beams and posts Something of a 4x4 nature or you could buy multiple 2x4 or 2x6 boards and use them to make beams. Very strong. In my case I have a 72 gallon bow front I am setting up and where I am putting it was an outside wall before an addition was put on so the floor joists are supported by the foundation just behind the tank. If they werent I would probably be looking into some extra support too.
